Questionable Fuel Economy?

2011 Exec VR6

Filled up the tank to full with premium

Just drove 440km, majority highway

Average fuel economy displayed on arrival to destination 10.4 L/100

Trip took 4 hours 12 min

Upon arrival gas tank is third full, I used 70L of gas to go 440km at 10.4L/100

This math isn’t adding up, is there something I need to get checked out or maintenance that needs to be done? As far as my math goes this trip should have used around 45L

Any help would be appreciated!

Are you checking “since reset” or “since refuel”? If checking “since reset”, that’s an average from potentially thousands of miles. So one bad/low fuel efficiency trip won’t change the average more than a few tenths. If checking “since refuel”, then it’s an average since you’ve refueled more than 10L I believe.

No idea what that translates to in American but I can assure you the Volkswagen meters aren't super accurate. Do the calculations by hand.

That seems ABOUT correct, depending on how fast you were going. If you were going 80mph I could see that being accurate

Middle teens for a gasser doing normal things is about what you should get. Tons of things will change that either way depending on how you drive and if most is highway or local traffic, flat terrain or mountains ,warm weather or cold etc.

It's a 5000lb brick with a massive overbuilt transmission and AWD system.

How fast are you traveling to get that economy? You're running premium fuel?

Might try new spark plugs with proper gap, run seafoam through the vacuum system then another can through the fuel tank. Check the air filter, make sure it's a good one and that it's clean. Clean the maf sensor. Run vagcom scan for errors

Honestly, I purchased the car mostly for road trip purposes. So annual mileage wasn’t a huge deciding factor. My previous car I did 50k kms over a 4 year period so not a lot of driving.

Factors I took into consideration with this vehicle was size, wanted some large to carry all equipment. Something with average fuel efficiency for the size, which I expected to be around 20mpg highway driving, as I wanted it for road trips, lastly I wanted something that was comfortable for long trips.

The trip I just did, which we didn’t even have anything in the car, just some overnight clothes, ended up being 14.75mpg. Highway for 95% of the trip, cruise set at 120km/h the whole way with no traffic. Not ideal, was expecting around1000km range highway, not 700km.
