Recently bought a second-hand 2005 R5 TDI, and am going to often off-road on a few trails in Bulgaria (Strandzha area)

My question is, what exactly does the auto diff setting do? My manual explains when to use High (normal driving) and Low + diff lock (off-road things), but never mentions the auto setting anywhere.

Does this setting simply automatically choose when to lock the centre differential?

It is always in “auto diff” mode. Unless you specifically select locked diff. That means it automatically changes the torque split based on various factors.
