If they are 100-watt bulbs... yes, you could likely run into a melting problem. The OEM bulbs burn at 55W... for a total of 110W draw. 200W is a lot of juice.
Problems associated with White H7 Xenon HID Light Bulbs
I recently purchased a set of two White H7 Xenon HID Light Bulbs to replace the light bulbs that came with my 2004 treg. I didn't know how to install them myself and the Volkswagen dealership said they would do it for $30. When I took them in the mechanic said that they might melt the light housing and then I would have to replace the whole headlight unit!!!! The specs for the light bulb are Hyper White, 5000K Color Temperature and the Type/Volt/Watt:H7, 12V, 100W. Before I go installing them and possible damaging my vehicle, I was wondering if anyone else had installed bulbs such as these and had any problem with melting the housing or frying the electronic due to the hight wattage and voltage (both are double what the factory bulbs are).

Actually if they're real HIDs they should be 35watts each

Since it seems these bulbs might cause damage to my beloved Treg, what are some recommended after market HID light bulbs. Preferably, ones that have been used before and don't melt my baby.
H7 sounds like a "xenon" looking halogen... rather than an actual xenon. The Xenon is a D1S bulb.
Definitely sounds like it as he doesn't mention a ballast/ignitor...

Yep, the factory HIDs are D1s bulbs using 35W ballasts. I have no idea what you got sold, but I bet there's nothing HID about them. Did you get the transformer ballast (box) with them? H7 is a type/size of bulb, but not what comes in the HID-equipped Touaregs.
Just find a total-loss TReg somewhere and buy the whole lighting assemblies out of it. Then you'll get the right housings and projector lamps, the ballasts, the self-leveling mechanisms (required to be legal in the U.S.), etc. Putting an HID bulb in a non-HID housing generally results in a poor lighting pattern since the two types of lamps have very different locations and shapes of light output.

You can get an H7 bulb with Xenon gas in it, that will burn in the standard lamp holder, at standard wattage and voltage, but provide a whiter light at around 4000K - Philips and Osram both legally offer this in the USA. They are referred to as Ultravision bulbs or words to this effect. The standard for H7 halogen is 3300K, which is noticeably yellow-ish. There is also an advanced H7 that throws a longer field, that would mimic the reach out of HID. But trying to make a halogen Touareg into an HID truck is not a good idea. No reputable manufacturer will offer any path for this - you'll only get the unknown players offering what is at best a gray area changeover.

if they are original xenon lights...they should be 35w...i bought a set of xenon lights...6000k..i the set was the bulbs and two ballasts...for my touareg 2009 v6...they have installed the lights but there was a problem...the computer showing that the light are burned out...
so they installed some little things which they ordered from germany...called "warning canceler" and now they work great....
if you want some little white color buy a set of 4300k - and make sure that they are 35w...
xenon lights should work on 35w...anything more or less...trust me...hey are some kind of imitation of xenon

You need to find a set of 55W H7's with a 5000k-6000k rating. These will give you a nice cool white light with just a small touch of cool blue, this is the closest thing to a true HID system that will work with a non-balasted halogen system. I have a set of Luminics H7 6000k's in my 2009 Touareg and they work great and have had no problems, they have been installed for 4 months and about 5000 miles. I am actually an engineer for a plastics company so I have a little bit of knowledge about plastic. A 100w bulb will most likely not melt the headlight housing but it WILL definetely melt your wiring harness and could cause major electrical problems. Most automotive headlight housing are injection molded out of polycarbonate (lexan), Polycarbonate has a very high heat deflection temp and an even higher melting point. It has a heat deflection temp of 145c/295f, a glass transition temp of 150c/302f and a melt temp of 514f/267c, a standard 55w halogen bulb can reach 600-800 degrees f and the range for a 100w halogen bulb can range from about 700-950 degrees f with that number being cut nearly in half just one inch or so away from the actual bulb surface. Furthermore the vacum metalized reflective chrome plating on the inside of the housing keeps heat away from the plastic, it reflects heat much in the same way it reflects light. So as you can see if you do the math neither one is going to melt a polycarbonate housing, but it will mess up your wiring.
I'm a newby so bear with! Total range of answers. Am I right that the replacement bulbs should be D1S / 35 W / 4300k / from Osram or Phillips? Anybody have a part number? I looked under the hood and am at a loss on how to even get to the bulb! What do you have to dismantle to get to them?

I just purchased a set of Sylvania ZXE 55 w H7. The package indicates made in Germany. Has anyone had problems with these, as the supplier indicated that they are new.
