Hi. I just bought a 2005 Touareg V8 for my teenage son. It was to be his first car ever. It ran fine when i bought it, however, my son took it to the gas station, put gas in and it wouldn't start back up again. Wouldn't even take a jump. We finally got it started and took it home. If I hook it up to a charger for hours, it will hold for awhile. If I just jump it from my car, it will start but turn it off and it won't start again. Even if we drive it for awhile. The codes I get are 1009,0101 and 0108. I don't think it's the battery. I know that may sound stupid (which I am when it comes to Touaregs) but I think it's something else. At this point I cannot afford to take it to a mechanic. I spent all the money I had buying this car. I am trying to resell it for $1500 because I did not realize how detailed these vehicles were. And I think it's too much for a teen to take care of. Never heard of Touareg before I bought the car. It's a beautiful vehicle and has everything anyone could dream of. I just cannot afford to keep something like this up. However, I would like some suggestions on what could be the no starting issue. Also, there's a strong gas smell inside the vehicle after driving for a few minutes. I have been reading about it and there's 1,000 things that could be making it not start. Yes, I am stupid when it comes to these things. If it was a Honda, I'm sure I would know. Any suggestions?

I would have the battery checked at the nearest parts store. Batteries do go bad, and when they do they do odd things especially on a car with a lot of electronics.



It is entirely possible that a 'bad battery' will take a charge "for a while". But when you load the battery with any type of electrical load it will not carry that load and will lose voltage. This is how an old battery that has reached the end of it it's life will act. Often time you can continue charging the battery and it will appear to keep working, but this is just the early phase of it's eventual demise. Sometimes it can take a year or two to go from ok to useless.


To me the key is that you can jump it and it'll start, you can run it (off the alternator) and it is fine, but when you shut it off the battery can not deliver enough amps to start the car. Most auto parts stores have a cart they can wheel to the vehicle and check the battery (or their parts counter people can remove the battery from the vehicle and test it in the store). A battery tester can tell in about 10 minutes if the battery is good (most of the time faster than 10 minutes.


The gas smell inside could be anything. It could be a result of repeated attempts to start the car with a bad battery or it or it could indicate something else entirely.


Check the battery first and then have the alternator checked (who knows maybe it isn't charging the battery). Then you can come back to the gas smell.

It's not a car for anyone on a budget.

Your V8 may also need a new timing belt, tensioners, water pump and thermostat. These must be changed every 80,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. If the belt breaks the engine is toast as others who delayed the change have found out.
