Volkswagen has introduced a three-litre V6 TDI engine in both the Phaeton and Touareg ranges. As well as using multi-injection technology, they're the first VW engines on the UK market to be fitted with the company's latest diesel particulate filter.

In both models the engine peaks at 222bhp, but the torque characteristics are different between the luxury saloon and the 4x4. The Phaeton has 332lb/ft from 1400rpm, while the Touareg provides 369 from 1750. Both cars come with a six-speed Tiptronic transmission.

Performance and economy figures for the Phaeton include a 0-62mph time of 8.8 seconds and a top speed of 145mph, with economy calculated at 36.7mpg extra urban and 29.4mpg combined. The CO2 rating is 259g/km.

The Touareg covers the 0-62mph sprint in 9.9 seconds, goes on to a maximum of 125mph, manages 32.5mpg extra urban and 25.9mpg combined. Here, the CO2 rating is 294g/km.

Available to order now, the Touareg costs £34,200 in standard form, with the Sport specification at a £1070 premium. Prices for the 3.0 TDI Phaeton are £41,040 for the five-seater and £46,495 for the four-seat layout. Both saloon versions come with air suspension, xenon headlamps and four-zone climate control.

6-pot diesels for VeeDub luxury cars (20.10.2004)

Volkswagen has expanded the TDI line-up in both of its luxury car ranges, with the arrival of Phaeton and Touareg V6 TDI models.

The new 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel features four valves per cylinder and advanced piezo electric injector technology. With this system, up to four fuel injections per cycle are possible, for better emissions control and superior refinement. Both the Touareg and the Phaeton V6 TDI feature Volkswagen's new DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) – the first Volkswagens to use this technology in the UK.

The V6 TDI is an especially important addition to the Phaeton range, as six-cylinder diesels are the best-selling engines in the luxury saloon sector. The new engine joins the most powerful production diesel engine to date, the 5.0-litre V10 TDI, in the Phaeton's diesel line-up.

The Phaeton V6 TDI starts at £41,040 RRP on the road for the five-seat model, going up to £46,495 for the four-seat version. The Touareg V6 TDI costs £34,200 RRP on the road, with the Sport version adding £1,070. Both vehicles are available to order now.

Foreign sites list fuel consumption. What units of measure depends on where they are located. In most of Europe, they list liters/100 km. On a UK site, they may list miles/imperial gallon. This is 20% larger than a US gallon. So unless Big Joe knows which gallon his source is using, reduce the MPG figures by 20% to get US MPG.

Too bad these models won't make it to the States until 2007 if at all.
