I never really used the tiptronic thing before I got the paddles, and I still don't. I just put it in S if I'm going to need a fast shift (entering highway, etc.). I find that paddles can't shift as fast as depressing the accelerator in S can. Also, quick, multiple pulls on the paddle shifters don't register multiple shifts if they are done too quickly in succession, thus negating their usefulness, IMO.

Like I said, mashing the go pedal with the transmission in S will be the fastest gear change you can get (it's smart enough to skip right through multiple gears, e.g. going from 6->3).
