We've had a few problems with our 2014 Touareg TDI.
-Water pump has been replaced
-EGR Cooler leak (this is not yet been fixed, but scheduled)
-Coolant is very dirty (hoping this is the EGR Cooler leak??)

Coolant was tough to get into the vehicle after the water pump was replaced (had to vacuum fill it).

In spite of the above, it seems to be running OK... except:

My wife drove the vehicle from cold about 5 minutes yesterday, and all of a sudden, the engine temp guage pinned to the right, and the coolant light came on.

It was a hot day, and the AC was on. (though that's not unusual for the summer)

She pulled over, opened the coolant reservoir, which started overflowing with boiling coolant. Then called me.

I drove to her, found the coolant level was a tiny bit low (due to the boil off). I let it cool, and since we were close to home I turned off the AC, turned the heater on max and drove home. The engine temp was fine the whole way home, but there was one issue: The heater did not work properly (blowing cold air), and the heater fan kept turning on and off.

So I'm assuming there was no coolant in the heater block for some reason (maybe it boiled off when it overheated? is that possible?)

I don't think it's just a bad coolant temp sensor (since coolant was actually boiling)

When I got home, I ran it for a while and finally the heater started working again. I've driven it since and it seemed to be ok. I monitored coolant temp with the scanner, and everything seemed to be ok.

No codes were tripped.

I'm thinking:
  • Cruddy coolant plugged something up or messed up the thermostat
  • AC compressor is bad or AC plugged and causing overheating issues
  • Coolant still not completely filling it and air pockets are there (though I don't know how I would check this?)

The thermostat in this vehicle seems to be a pain to replace, normally I might just replace it to see what happens, but it's a bit of a pain plus more expensive than other thermostats (surprise surprise).

Is there anything that I'm missing?

I'll take door #3. You dont state the time between the water pump replacement and this incident but I'd suspect an air pocket although My first suspicion was the stat. It now sounds like perhaps you've got all the air out so hopefully you're good to go. absence of heat would suggest the heater core was isolated when bleeding so had air entrapped.

2 points...a vacuum fill doesnt always work well if doing a partial fill and I'm assuming you've already cautioned your lady about not removing the radiator cap when the engine is hot.

-Water pump replacement was about 3 weeks before the incident
-The heater was working for those 3 weeks until the incident. Nothing really changed and all of a sudden it overheated and the heater didn't work. (but now works again)
-I did caution her against opening the overflow (no radiator cap on the Touareg TDI... unfortunately.)

Re-read Jeff's reply in post #2

Also, for your information.. turning the AC on would have enabled the secondary fan for additional cooling, but running it on "heat" instead of the cooling setting, to help with heat flow

Even with air in the system, a visual of coolant level will look fine. get a proper system flush and correct coolant. air in there needs to be removed.
on some older brands of vehicles one could do a procedure called “burping” to get rid of air, but not on Touareg that I am aware of.

Exactly, though technically you CAN burp a Touareg, it just takes forever and depends on how low the coolant went down.

Hi,
have a V8TDI. Had to replace coolant pump due to fluid leak. On V8 TDI coolant pump is driven from the engine rear by hex core shaft. Mechanjcs failed to put in back in place when putting new pump. Had same symptoms. Saved my engine by putting heater on max (there is a little electtrical pump feeding it) so that my engine could keep acceptablez temperature at low load and get back to garage. Then after investigation they found their mistake: Missed putting the hexagonal drive shaft at rear of the pump.... Pump was not driven !!! Do not know if same pump drive on V6 but hope this may help
