I need to replace my windshield on my 2005 touareg v8 for the first time and would like to get your opinion. I have the following options :

$280.31 for FYG.
$315.39 for Pilkington or ( quoted by Precision Auto Glass in Denver, CO )
$873.10 from a vw dealer.

Any recommendations?

Pilkington.

And the screen fitter may have great difficulty getting the wiper arms off so give him some help by carefully spraying penetrating oil on the wiper motor spindles every day for a week first!

Definately not the dealer using OEM glass, having the wife's done thru Safelite Tuesday, I believe the cost quote was $370.00. Nooby's right the wipers can really be stuck on. When I had my windshield replaced I thought I'd be a great help and remove them because I didn't want them screwed up. Turns out I screwed them up and pulled the spline out of the wiper arm and had to JB weld it back together. Make sure whoever does the install has done a Touareg before. The air quality sensor is hooked to windshield cowl on the drivers side so easy does it when removing.

Well, I had a Pilkington done by Safelight and it was ugly brown tint and had hundreds of tiny bubbles that were invisible (I had inspected it in the noon-sun) until I drove it home into the sunset. Had to have them (Safelight) remove and replace with OEM...they only charged $100 more. I discovered Safelight does all the dealer work in Boulder, at least. Both installers were top notch. They just grabbed the wiper assembly and shook it loose, no pullers or anything.

Thanks for the feedback. The rep mentioned that the replacement has rain sensors and some grey tint.

I saw somebody in another forum complaining about how wipers were not completely covering the replacement windshield especially in the middle part. I guess the original windshield has some waves in it and the replacement did not have those.

Does anybody experience the same issue?

This is just me but I'd never put anything except OEM glass in the windshield. You're going to be looking through that glass 100% of the time so if it's not "right" it'll be a constant annoyance.

Any automotive glass shop can get OEM glass, not just the dealer. And the dealer will probably farm out the job anyway. Windshield replacement is a very specialized task to do correctly. My new GTI's windshield was cracked from the factory, dealer farmed the job out to A-1 Auto Glass here. They nailed it the first time and used OEM glass.

The black dots are decor.

Heated screens have very fine wires in them that, for me anyway, are really annoying so I wouldn't want one.

Saint Gobain Sekurit was the OEM glass so I'm puzzled by your photo too!

This is incorrect at least for the T3. I forgot what was on my T1. OEM glass is Saint Gobain Sekurit for the front windshield in the U.S. and I am assuming Canada. It is possible that Guardian is another name for the same stuff. It is also possible the windshield was replaced due to damage after arriving at the dealer or port. Who knows?

Saint Gob on my T1 from memory.

Saint Gobain Sekurit on my sold 2004 and current 2006.

Wonder if the wind shield was damaged during transit and replaced before selling as NEW?

Mine is also Saint Gobain Sekurit. It was replaced by the glass vendor that my insurance company contracted, but I insisted on OE glass. Took an extra week or so to get. Identical to the old cracked one. (Bulls-Eye gravel strike that turned into a big crack when the glass guy tried to plug it. Oh well.)

After taking delivery of my GTI on a Friday, I discovered a very small crack at the top of the windshield, where the rearview mirror mounts. On Saturday the crack had extended below the mirror so it was plainly visible. On Sunday morning, the crack was about 2/3rds of the way down. By the end of that day the crack extended all the way, top to bottom. Dealer had a glass specialist install a new Saint Gobain windshield. No problems after 8K miles so far.

My insurance company provided Pilkington last year. Maybe only mine but it's a poor quality glass with more than a few vertical distortions. The top tint didn't match the OEM Saint Gobain Sekurit glass. I understand Pilkinton does make OEM glass for some companies but the example I got was bunk. Will go OEM next time.

Mentioning the auto wiper feature. Mine does a dry wipe from time to time just after engine startup, but I think it's due to pollen, dust on the sensor/glass surface.

Sometimes immediately after startup, sometimes 10 seconds after startup. I first thought there was a sensor issue for a few weeks, until it happened when the windshield was GREEN with pollen one day after work. Then it clicked in my head the sensor can see dust that I can't because it's consistent across the glass.

Has anyone with ACC replaced a windshield?

The reason I ask is because my ACC completely stopped working after intermittently dropping out since new. The dealer recalibrated the system as goodwill since I had so many issues that they were unable to replicate. Unfortunately, it is still not working...work in progress. What caught my ear was when the service advisor called to say they were recalibrating the cruise. He casually mentioned I should budget $550 to recalibrate the cruise and perform a wheel alignment every time I replaced the windshield, because the sensor in the windshield never goes in the same exact location every time the windshield is replaced.

Not that it has any value aside from the irony, I had just ordered a windshield from their parts department that very morning.

So the question is: have you replaced a windshield on an ACC equipped car, and if so, did you recalibrate/align the car? If you did not, did you notice any effect to your adaptive cruise?

I did replace a windshield, but not on my Touareg. Did it on my 7 series, and the ACC works perfectly, there was absolutely no difference.
I don't have ACC on my T3 unfortunately, but all the cars I've ever seen had the radar mounted in the front bumper. You problem sounds strange to me, as if something else would be causing the fault. As far as I know, the camera mounted above the rear view mirror is used for Front Collision Warning and that thing that turns on and off your high beams.
A new windshield should theoretically have nothing to do with the ACC. It might interfere with other things, but the radar (which SHOULD be in the front bumper-I don't know) should not be disturbed by it.
Look I'm no mechanic, but what does a windshield have to do with wheel alignment?

Thanks for the feedback on the 7 series.

I am at a bit of a loss. The radar sensors are below the front bumper, but there is another sensor, a "front-facing camera" in the windshield. And ACC windshields are different part numbers than windshields with just a rain sensor. Per Volkswagen:

"The Touareg has a forward-facing camera at the top center of its windshield, four ultrasonic sensors on its front bumper and a pair of radar sensors near the front foglights. When ACC is on, these sensors monitor the traffic in front of the Touareg and adjust its speed accordingly. The following distance is determined by a setting you control. Move the Distance switch left or right to decrease or increase this distance."

Unfortunately, erwin does not cover this version of ACC, only the ACC in models up to 2010. It does include the statement that manual calibration of the master radar sensor (the right one I believe) is required any time the module is replaced, there are any adjustments made to the front or rear suspension, or there is any impact to the front or replacement of components up front like the bumper.

I believe the alignment is precautionary to make sure that the car is not dog-legging. Erwin does state that if the radar sensor is 1 degree out of alignment, the focal point will be 7' off at maximum range. My only data point here is that I aligned the car at an indy shop 6 months ago due to tire cupping, did not recalibrate anything, and saw neither an improvement nor deterioration in any of the ACC functions.

The dealer service advisor also stated the the ACC units go out of calibration over time and should be recalibrated (again for $550) every two years. I'm mulling that one over in my head; I'm a little skeptical as I cannot figure out what the mechanism for this is, but I am keeping an open mind.

Go with the dealer and avoid surprises like ugly tint or myriad bubbles. I got an oem from safelight in my driveway and was actually able to inspect it before installation.
