I have just purchased a new Touareg V6 180. Have done 4500km now. I recently towed our caravan which is not big 15' to South Australia a one day 800km trip approx. it was a warm day 37c degrees plus. I noticed the temperature gauge that always sat at 90 degrees continually fluctuated between 90 and 105 (still in the normal range but at the high end). I have never experienced this with my other tow vehicles (Land Rover discovery & Nissan Pathfinder). I was towing at 100kph. The car was fantastic and did the job with ease, but I have a question re the temp gauge movement. Is this normal? Have other owners who tow experienced this. The manual does say the vehicles operating temp will be effected by outside ambient temperatures. Advice from the technical people at the VW dealership say this is normal, but as I have said I have not owned a vehicle that has had the temp gauge continually go up and down like this? I would appreciate feedback from others who may have experienced this. As I purchased the Touareg primarily for a tow vehicle and will probably being towing when the ambient temperature will be 35c plus often, I would like some assurance all is ok?

Wayne, mine is a different animal, ie V10, but with 3+ tonnes on the back is has never moved above 90-deg. over 20K + kilometers. Seems odd to me that it would fluctuate. Other Treg towers??

Thanks for the feedback. I do think it is a bit odd, even thought the VW tech advice is that this is normal they say the Touareg guage is sensitive and more accurate than what is in other vehicles!! It has only occurred when towing, normal driving on country roads and city it doesn't move from the 90 degree setting. I will keep an eye on it.
Most modern cars have electronically smoothed temperature gauges so it may well show 90C normal all the way from 60C to 120C !!! My previous Hyundai was like that and my Touareg certainly shows 90C normal on the gauge when the ECU/OBD temperature is still 60C but rising.
I use a Scangauge II plugged in the OBD port to show what the ECU is seeing - I know that my Hyundai gauge only moved off normal at 120C as the head-gasket blew.
My Touareg hasn't gone beyond 100C at the OBD in towing use - but I'm in a UK in winter!

I have towed my Coromal 6.1m full van (about 1.8-2T loaded) from Albany back to Perth in 35+ Degrees a few weeks ago and I expected the gauge to move but I reckon the only "movement" was from me tilting my head looking at it from all angles going "are you SURE you're not going to move up - even a little bit?"
That was driving at 100 km/hr (set at 103km on the C/C) up hill and down dale.
Not to say that there's anything untoward with yours actually moving up and down - providing it is in the normal range and stays that way.
I'm no engine expert but I wonder if with only 4,500km on the speedo yours is not only "working" to tow the can but also still running in with a tighter engine. It's not going to be fully loosened up yet I wouldn't expect. Somebody like Nooby can correct me if I am wrong...
Mine has 24,000km on it (it's probably not fully loosened up yet either but it's sure more spirited than when it had its first "real flogging" at about 2,500km) but it's got to be more sloppy than one with 4500k on the odo.
Suggest you just keep a watchful eye on the coolant and the oil level to make sure there's nothing untoward there - especially coolant.

The cooling systems easily deal with towing 3500 kg under any conditions. So its operating as designed
I have used a OBDII with iPad gauges app to observe the temp change with mountain grades.
For me, it was good to know how the temp changed in real time with different grades and elevation. I have a much better appreciate what is too much speed, grade and elevation.

I had the our best local dealer ask VW tech support why. They said "customers were complaining the temperature gauge moved around to much". In other words "Dumb it down for the stupid people!" :-/And it makes me wonder why we even have a temp gauge in the first place. :- /
Some manufacturers have removed it altogether and replaced it with a warning light that tells you your engine has just boiled over - a bit like the low oil pressure warning light that tells you your engine has just gone bang!I had the our best local dealer ask VW tech support why. Before I heard that, I just figured it was a REALLY good thermostat! LOL!
I would love to see a towing button. It would inform the computers for the engine, transmission, cruise control, etc; you need to get down to the business of towing. I would add the temperature gauge as well.

Actually can you confirm you are referring to oil temp not water temp?
Oil temp will move and is normal.
If water temp goes higher than 90 then you could have an issue

My understanding is that it's not a brake controller being connected, but when it detects additional load on the wiring/lighting etc. when a trailer is connected up.Doesn't the factory towing module do that when a brake controller is installed and hooked up?
I am referring to the water/coolant temp. When towing after about 1 hour of driving the temp guage rose to about 105, then dropped, it then continued to do this constantly throughout the trip never really going beyond 105 approx. when I slowed to 60kph when going through a town it fell quickly to 90, and soon after when accelerating to 100 kph it soon repeated the fluctuation between 90 - 105. The VW technical advice was that this was normal and that the thermostat was opening and closing as expected and the fans were cutting in. The reason I raise the question is that our current van is a light pop top and we are considering a larger full size 17' van that wil be heavier all round (tow ball and ATM) for our loop of Australia, when it is highly likely the outside temp like on this rip could be quite warm. I would change the cts, thermostat and water body and or pump
