Just on a trip down in FL from up in NJ and checked the oil meter in the computer. It appears to be down about ¾ of a quart, I'm right around 7,000 miles on the truck. I'm not concerned because most vehicles allow up to 1Q every 1,000 miles. Just curious what other folks are seeing in terms of consumption on these trucks.

Yeah I made sure to check it on level ground after it's been warmed up and turned off.

It is still on the original oil, haven't done the first oil change yet, so I'm assuming some of it is being absorbed into the engine metal and also lost some during the ring-seating.

I don't notice any on the rear bumper or tailpipes and it's less than a quart in almost 7,000 miles which isn't bad!

I've done 12,000kms and I have gone from being full on the computer to just above the minimum mark. I'm guessing it will be bang on this minimum mark when I go in for my first service at 15,000kms.

FYI my cruiser went through oil like this till about 25,000kms and then stopped using. It was a V8 twin turbo diesel.

X5 went through at the same rate for about the first 12,000kms. It was a turbo diesel straight 6.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. Great community here. :)

On a side note, I'm getting about 27mpg at 85-95mph on long trips. I can't complain about that at all.

It was great to fill up in Savanah, GA and not have to refill until 3 days after I arrived in Fort Lauderdale and had driven around for about 100-150 miles locally here.

I had zero oil consumption with my 2012 T3 TDI with the CATA motor. Nada. The 2013 T#3 TDI I bought new went through 4 marks and half a liter in 2000 miles of towing my 21 foot travel trailer. I added a full liter of oil at 4020 miles. Infotainment center did now show over filled. My gut feeling tells me that VW has cheapened the build of this engine in the QC department to save money, rougher finish on the bore, not laser bore honed. I will be changing the motor oil on the 2013 myself at 5000 miles, I've never had a new VW TDI that burned motor oil as much as this particular model does.

Thanks for the feedback. I absolutely love your negativity on the 2013+ engines throughout all your posts on here. It gets a little old like a broken record hearing you ripping on them constantly. You have such a chip on your should it's AMAZING. I've been on auto forums as a mod for the past 15 years and can spot your type a mile away.

Oh very impressive background. I am still amazed at the zeal with which you put your opinion with a sample size of exactly ONE out there as biblical speech!

You may have time to post up all the time and your THEORIES may be correct, but it is amazing how you love to bash these trucks constantly.

I don't think I've seen you post anything positive about them. I guess you should get back to beating your wife since you are such an angry man all the time, don't let my posts detract from your constant negativity!

:)

PS: You are what we call in the business all "internet muscles"!

Your search efforts are weak and ineffectual. For an internet guy, I thought you'd be better at it. Get back to me when you get a 37 MPG tank out of a 2012 Touareg TDi, or 55 mpg out of a 6 man passat TDI SE.

Argue with the moderator if you have a problem with his post.

The difference is that I've contacted a fair sample size of owners of both vehicles, both by PM, and if I happen by chance to bump into them while fueling up. I know my BIL's burns oil, nickM's yours and 7 or 8 others that I've contacted, either in person or by PM. Every single person that's got 6000 plus miles on theirs is concerned that the oil level is dropping on the sensor. I have not heard a single person that has gone in for their 20,000 or 30,000 mile service yet with a 2013 that has proof that the consumption of oil has stopped or declined. What I can say is with today's engine building technology, every single VW Common Rail TDI motor format that I've seen from 2009-2012 has not had oil consumption problems being commented on in the first 10,000 miles. Not on TDI club, that I've seen, and not here. The 2013 Touareg TDI is another matter, in my samplings. That you ask about it indicates to me that it's a concern and a potential problem in your eyes, why else would you ask about it in public for a larger sample size?

I have the 2013 TDI V6 engine and it has done 25.000km now, with one oil change at 18.000 km.

Since the oil change it has not used any oil what so ever (still touching the max mark). I bought it second hand, and got the oil change done when I bought it, so I can't say for shure if it had any consumption for the first 18.000km - but when I checked the car before buying (before the oil change) the oil level was exactly at full (touching max mark).

I asked a very good friend of mine that works for one of the larger VW dealers in Norway (and have done so for the last 30 years) about the oil consumption of both the pre 2013 engine and the latest engine, and he said that both of them where known for using very little oil, but it might vary depending on produktion tollerances and how they are driven in when new.

They had not experienced any differense between the two engines regarding oil consumption, neither had the Audi section of the dealership regarding the different 3.0 TDI versions on the Audi models.

No popcorn guys, I was simply pointing out that Niner is overly negative when it comes to his posts. I've seen him lambaste folks in the towing section for their choice of tow vehicles etc. Very typical of an internet bully. Like I said I've been in this rodeo for almost 15 years as moderator on various car forums both as a volunteer and as a paid consultant. :)

As for Niner, I'm sure he is a great guy with lots of knowledge, his delivery is what needs some work :)

Thanks for all the responses fellas.

Mike, it's like mining for gold, dedication and hard work finds you the gold nuggets. Like most on here, that don't use the search function or are inherently lazy, the same topics come up over, and over, and over and over. And the same people in the know answer all the questions, over, and over and over and over, for Newbies, or for the lazy folks. There will always be folks that can not handle the truth, or can't accept others experiences or observations. I have reasonable expectations from VW TDI motors, having owned VW Audi and Ford diesel product since 1981. I rebuilt my Audi5000Td motor myself, rebuilt the turbo on it myself too. Rebuilt and resealed the injector pump on it too, myself, when Low Sulfur diesel fuel was shoved on us by CARB in 1992 or 1993 and destroyed the seals in a matter of 2 fill ups.

Moderating is a volunteer job for those in need of control. Been there, done that, on a couple of fly fishing bulletin boards. Here's a picture of me, in my internet moderating days.

Ha, good one. What about outboard motors?, and motor-cars? Then there is locomotive . . . , let's not forget the motorcycle and then that magazine, Motor Trend. General Motors, you tell them mickmackinbiker!

Steppenwolf should change the lyrics to their song, "Born to be wild" to begin with;

Get your engine runnin', head out on the highway

I don't think initial oil burn in the first 25k is an issue. I have the CATA and before the first oil change it used a little oil maybe a half liter. Second oil change it used a tiny bit maybe a quarter. Since then it hasn't registered any consumption at all. 77k on the clock now.

Niner is a great contributer to this forum. He's very knowledgeable, even though sometimes the glass is half empty. :)

When I purchased mine with 60miles on the odo. the oil meter was one tick down at warm up. After the first 3500 miles it was almost a quart low, which I had the dealer top off. Since then, including the first oil change, there has not been any meter level oil change.

IMO this early loss of oil at early ownership was the product of the touareg sitting on the lot for a while, hardly driven with 38 hours of run time on the engine... that is a lot of idle time... But before we get into how bad that was for the engine, I still get great fuel economy and I have the full 10y 100k warranty (just in case)...

"CATA" is engine code by VAG Volkswagen Audi Group, some Porsche cars too. The CATA engine was used in North American Touaregs, from 2009-2012. It's their 3.0 liter TDI common rail clean diesel motor here in the states, first generation, with laser honed cylinders, and was first featured in the Audi Q7. Believe phaeton got the CARA, Q7 got the CASA and Touareg the CATA in 2008 or 2009.

You can put the Debbie Downers on your "Ignore List" and not be constantly subjected to their speculation-based negativity. Honestly it's beyond me how any CT member finds the constant killjoy attitude useful.

Just passed the 1000 mile odo mark on my '14 TDI, oil level reading is still at Maximum. My '13 tended to drop about 1/2 liter in 5000 miles. The '12 dropped about 1/4 liter in 5000 miles.

OP -

Mine has 8400 miles on it and is two clicks above the minimum level on the electronic display. Draw your own conclusions, but I don't find that to be in the least bit alarming. 10000 mile spa treatment will be scheduled soon.

Measured fuel consumption is just under 26 mpg, slightly lower than the built-in long term calculator. Tailpipes stay cleaner than my old gas V8 as well.

Happy with the build quality and especially happy with the performance so far.

I am scratching my head on this thread, for if the OP is going to ask the question/s (MSG #1) he really should be ready for the answer/s.(MSG #6) I really did not find Niner's responses "negative", but more compare (12) contrast (13) and matter of fact and possible explanations WHY !!?? . So it is apparent the OP was not ready for the realities nor liked the answers, but wanted specific responses, which were not made known.

Now I find this thread instructive on a number of levels, aka Touareg 12/13/14 MY RELATED.

So boy'z & gurl's, keep on keeping on !

For my oil level in my 2013 TDI, i'm now at 11,000 km and on the screen, it shows about 3 to 4 marks down from the full line. I got my Treg (demo) at 9,700 km and it was about the same. Since it's only less than 1/2 litre (out of 7, or 8 litres), I can live with it. I will see when I will do the 15K maintenance oil change. However, my 2012 Passat TDI (32,000 km) don't burn 1 ml oil.

With my previous Nissan 2003 Pathfinder, I was burning about 1/2 liter of oil (synthetic Mobil 1) every 5,000 km when pulling my travel trailer (25', 4,300 lbs loaded). Not a big deal. My Hondas (Civic) and other Nissans (Maxima and Sentra) never need any oil between oil changes.

For the AdBlue, to see how much I need, I did refill my Treg (no warning on the dash board) at exactly 10,000 km and I put 10 litres in it. So 1 L by 1,000 km. For my Passat, i'ts about 0.5- 0.6 litre per 1,000 km.

Niner, I love your California style shorts... :))))))))))))))))))))))))

Same experience at 7K. Topped it off with M1 ESP. Changed at 10K.

'10 Jetta TDI did same thing. Rock solid after 1st 10K.

I added a full liter over the first 8k or so miles to keep it at full digital reading.
Oil change just before 10k.
Since then another 7k miles and I am currently 2 tick marks down.

2012 TDI Sport. Zero tick marks down at 10,900 miles and first oil and filter. At 18,600 now, still on the full mark on the sensor, the halfway mark on the dipstick, on flat level ground in the garage.

2013 TDI Sport. Full on sensor at 1500 miles when I started trailering, lost 2/8ths trailering 1050 miles to west yellowstone. Drove around Yellowstone for 18 days, and 700 miles, still 2/8ths down, drove back 1050 miles, and was 4/8ths down when I got to Las Vegas to fill up, another 250 miles or so to get home. Added a full liter, did now show "overfilled" I've put about 6-700 miles on the Touareg since the end of September. Too soon to tell how much more it will burn before 10,000 miles, but I went through 4 clicks and 1/2 a liter for sure in 2100 miles of towing. I towed about 6000 miles on my first 10,000 on the 2012,, same trailer, same type of trips and elevation gains, and never lost any appreciable or measureable amount. The 2012 gets on the full boost of the turbo a lot sooner than the 2013 does. That might be a consideration.

Know for certain that while trailering, I was on the boost the whole time. Trailering a 8 foot by 7 foot high wall and dragging it through the dirty air behind the Touareg is a major load, full time on the Touareg when doing 55 to 60 mph, all the time, even going down hill.
