Hello friends, I have a 2014 Treg with the 3 litre diesel. Do these oil level indicators on the dash act up or have issues? I changed the oil using the specs (including filter). After driving a while the dash says to add up to 1.2 litres. So I add that amount and drive some more. The dash still shows to add 1.2 litres?? No leaks. Do these sensors have issues or is there something I have to do to "reset" the oil level. I don't want to over fill it.

I'd like to put in a manual dipstick. Is there anything extra that needs to be done other than pulling the plug in the dipstick tube and put in a dipstick?
Thanks

Research a dipstick for that particular engine. You can also buy an adjustable dipstick. Can’t remember the part number.
Just pull the plastic plug, insert the dipstick, after put the plastic plug back in.
That’s the way the dealer does oil changes
That’s how I also check oil level instead of waiting for it to register on the GUI

an adjustable dipstick?? That sounds like a horrible idea! I want to know the true level of the oil and would get a proper one. VW says the plug isn't reusable. Thank you for your effort to help but I don't feel this is good info.

Have you tried opening the hood for a minute or so then closing it to reset the system so it re-reads the oil level? You will probably get a message saying to wait 2 minutes and that the engine must be warm and off.
Hopefully at this point you haven't overfilled the engine, especially if you initially followed the filling specs with filter.

The "adjustable" dipstick is a multi-model device where the adjustment is set for the specific model/engine being checked - there is no "proper" one in the sense of model-specific.

Yes I've tried opening the hood also. I've called two dealers and got different answers. I've going to buy a dipstick because I don't trust the electronic sensor. Great a convenience when they work but cause real headaches when they don't. VW puts a dipstick tube on the truck with a cap instead of the $74 dipstick they want to sell me?
Back to old school for this old guy!

That's Canadian dollars but they are still nuts. That is the right part number. One dealer gave it too me and the other one wouldn't give out the part number?.
Thanks, I went to that site and they are now quoting $42.43 Canadian PLUS shipping so it would end up coming out to about the same. Their site said that this part number would NOT fit??
Never thought about a used one, thanks.

Don't worry, it fits. It is used in Cayenne, Q7 and Touareg. If you don't want to buy new one, try junkyard. Used one or new one, it doesn't matter. If its not damaged or bent, it will work.
I didn't buy it from dealer, but from local parts supplier. Do you have any other option than vw dealer?

You'd have to go older, new models won't have one either

I recently bought mine for $24USD on eBay from eurotrade777. Shipping was cheap and didn't take too long either.

I use my adjustable dipstick every time I change oil! I set it for that particular engine. The plug that I have in the tube has an o-ring on it so it can be removed and put back with no issues. I’m sure if you were a mechanic you would be able to work it out with no mistakes

When the oil level is a bit low there are zero warnings on the instrument cluster. Can you take a picture of this? Maybe it happens when the engine is more than a quart of oil below full. The electronic gauge only has enough range to show up to a quart, if it was full.

The electronic oil level indication in the multi media screen (CAR button, SERVICE, oil level gauge) shows a complete quart/liter of oil for the range. There are 8 tick marks on that screen. Each tick represent 4 ounces approx.

Get the engine to operating temp. Shut off for a couple of minutes, turn ignition on (not the engine) and check oil level in the electronic gauge. It should read lower. This would be a good check to see if the oil level sensor is working.

Adding a dipstick would only be an alternative if you had a failed oil level sensor. I do not know the manner they might fail (shorted wire or broken wire ?) , but it might appear on a VCDS scan as a fault.

yes I did all that. I'm a retired mechanic. I mentioned I filled it to specs. Looking for someone that has experience with this issue
Yes, you say you filled it to specs, but I'm more interested in knowing exactly how much you put in. Throw me a number. I've yet to see one act up like that all of a sudden after changing the oil, so I'm curious.
