Oil Leak from Fuel Pump

I have a 2004 V10 TDI that there was obvious damage to the valve cover gasket and oil was leaking. The VW dealership had changed the injectors and the turbo on the side the oil was leaking and claimed that I needed to change the other turbo even though there were no leaks on the side of the turbo they wanted to change there were no fault codes. They said that one turbo is overpowering the other turbo. We agreed that in order to find the oil leak the engine had to be pulled which VW wanted to charge me another $1800 to determine if the oil leak was their fault or the turbo. After some discussions they agreed that they will pull the engine for and if the oil leak was their fault it would be covered by VW however if it was the turbo then we would have to pay $900. After pulling the engine and removing the valve cover there was obvious damage to the bottom right corner of the valve cover gasket. VW is going to replace the gasket and cover the cost however they are claiming that the fuel pump needs to be changed because they say that is where the oil leak is. I inspected it and took pictures of the fuel pump and cannot see how it could be leaking oil if they change the fuel pump then I will have to pay the $1800 for pulling the engine plus the cost of the fuel pump. My question is has anyone here ever heard of oil leaking out of the fuel pump?

Your V10 had a 'tandem pump' on the R cylinder bank. Tandem means a combination vacuum/fuel pump. The joint between the tandem pump and the head can leak lube oil. a LOT of lube oil! The repair on mine was covered under the VW Platinum warranty. And yes, they DID remove the engine although there is info floating around here that it is not strictly required.
On the question of one turbo "overpowering" the other that is nonsense! The variable vane controls for each of the turbos is controlled independently by the ECU computer for each side. There is no crossover and even if one of the turbos leaks more oil than the other the air output doesn't change on that account. Now, if one of the compressor wheels is broken that is another story!!

Pictures

The side that was leaking is the driver side the pictures show the fuel pump and the last picture shows the valve cover seal I could not see where on the pump that oil could leak could you tell me where yours was leaking from

The tandem pump is on the Right (passenger) side. That is the pump which was leaking on mine. The leak was not from the pump itself but around the joint where the pump assembly interfaces with the head. There is another pump on the 'same' place on the Left head [It might be fuel only or vacuum only but it is not the tandem pump]. I would expect the same joint might leak and for the same reasons.
By the way, since your engine is obviously out of the car it is now possible to do a quick check of the turbos. Remove the pipe from the suction side (center) of the compressor stage on each pump. Put a finger on the center nut of each compressor wheel and try to move the shaft in a RADIAL direction - side-to-side. If there is noticable looseness (movement) the front bearing is beginning to fail [this is where the turbo oil leak originates since the front bearing is both a bearing and a seal] and the turbo should be replaced. Also try to move each shaft is the AXIAL direction. A little movement there is OK.

Ressurecting a yr old thread, but I'm researching a fuel/oil leak at the rear or the driver's side cylinder bank.
From what I've gathered so far, it's the fuel pump (very similar visually and operation to the tandem vacuum/fuel pump on the right side rear of the motor).
helfriwj: Did you get your's fixed? Any ideas as to part numbers for gaskets/seals for that pump?

I noticed leaking oil from around the fuel injector seal area on my 2015 TDI RLine and my turbo lag and hesitation went away completely for about 4 weeks. However, now i've got the turbo lag again and i'm leaking oil all over again from the same area it looks like. Below is the work that the VW dealer did (which temporarily took away my lag problem).
