I've had this annoying oil seep/leak for a few months now, as the cabin will smell when at a stop light with the engine hot. Since my tdi warranty is up soon, I took it to VW. They said they did an initial scan and found a couple codes for a NOx sensor and the adblue system, so theyre replacing the tank/heater assembly and a NOx sensor under warranty. However they found a leak coming from the oil filter housing. Big job, $1,500 was quoted and they would replace the whole housing. Trying to find some more info on replacement procedure but can't. How bad is it to do?

I see, I thought it was one of those hyperlinks generated by ads, which I see all the time. Either way, it's interesting because mine was the exact code. I knew of this code but never mentioned it because I was waiting for it to set an engine light, so I could take it in. It set the fault roughly 1,500km ago and only happened once, so I didn't think they'd want to touch it, just clear it and send me on my way. But on their scan they saw this fault as well as a Adblue line pressure too low, so they're just doing everything under warranty without me asking, so that was nice. Really wish my oil leak was covered though

Yeah, that oil filter housing isn't covered under the dieselgate warranty. It includes the thermostat. It's not a bad job to replace though. There's a coolant pipe that runs in front of it that needs to be removed, but it's really only a 2.5 hour job. Last time I bought one for mine, the part was around $450 CAD. $1500 for that job seems a bit steep.

That’s all I needed to know, Thankyou. And yeah I’m not sure where abouts you are but in Calgary all the vw dealers labour rates are around $170 an hour. I’ll know the breakdown of the part pricing once my advisor emails it to me but yeah I read one guy recommended buy a cheap eBay filter housing, then buying the gaskets from fcp euro and the cost is about $200 all in. I may do that but I have more research to do. Kinda disapointed under my manifold isn’t leaking because even my advisor said everything underneath that manifold is covered so she was hoping it was leaking too because warranty pays good for that kinda stuff.

Don't buy the cheap crap, you'll regret it. If you're handy, you'll be able to replace it yourself. Buy the OEM housing. It comes with gaskets and even an oil filter. There's a coolant pipe that runs along the front that you'll need a couple of o-rings for.

Drain the coolant and remove the serpentine belt, or you'll spill oil/coolant on it. Remove the oil filter cap and oil filter, so the oil in the housing drains down. Remove that pipe I previously mentioned, then there's one wiring connector I think, then a few bolts that hold the housing on. Put it all back together with the new housing, then clean any oil or coolant that was spilled on the pulleys. Put the belt back on and fill with coolant. Use the OE coolant, not the universal stuff. Check and top up the engine oil with the correct spec. oil.

Or if you're not comfortable with all that, find a competent independent shop that can do the job for you. Just make sure they use OEM parts and coolant.

Have you had a look yourself to see if any oil is under the intake manifold? It's pretty hard to see, but not impossible. I don't believe a leaking oil filter housing can cause oil to collect under the manifold. If there is oil under there, it would have to be coming from somewhere else.

Oh yeah I’m confident I can tackle this on my own, I’m used to replacing transmissions, clutches and engines in the mk4’s, 5’s and 6’s. I’ve just never torn into a diesel Touareg before and it’s just fear of the unknown. They put dye in my oil 1,000km ago and when I dropped it off yesterday they rechecked with a uv light and a bunch of oil had collected around the filter housing and is trickling down. Never looked there, so I’ll do that myself on its next oil change since it’s coming up in a month or so. Thankyou very much for the tips though. I do plan to delete this thing in the fall so under the manifold isn’t a huge worry to me since I’ll be yanking the egr cooler out and replacing my intake manifold since I can only imagine how much carbon and soot is caked in there.

If you don't idle a lot it shouldn't be that bad in your intake. Much simpler to soak it in carb cleaner or similar, and install again when clean. Once you take off the throttle body you'll have a really good idea of the degree of accumulation.

Hey. Had exact prob with my vw polo. Ended up being cracked plastic egr pipe at rear of engine, hard to see, very fumey inside cabin only when stationary. Might worth checking out as much cheaper to fix.
