Oil Consumption Norms

I am 1,000 miles away from my 30k service and here is the photo of my current oil level. I would say this has been "normal" for my vehicle. However, I wanted to get people's take to see if it indeed is "normal" oil consumption. Is the engine consuming too much oil?

Of the several TDIs I've owned, the "worst" oil consumption was about 1/2 liter in 5000 miles. I consider that within normal limits.
At almost 50k miles, mine uses about 1/2 quart or so in 10k miles between oil changes.

How does that equate to the oil level screen on the vehicle? Does that mean halfway down like mine?

According to pp. 411-412 of my owner's manual, the difference between the Max line (top) and the Min line (bottom) is one quart/liter (yes, I know they are not the same).

Agree, the difference between max & min is ~1 liter/quart.
Mine is a 2015 tdi with 24000km, the light came on today showing 1,25 liter low, i stopped at the dealer and they indeed add 1,25 liter to top it, that mean it took 1,25 liter in 10000km,

when i asked the service rep if it was normal, he checked the VW fuel consumption spec on is PC and i was stund by the answer.

For the VW Touareg 2015 TDI, Volkswagen is saying that the normal oil consumption is 500ml per 1000km, wich is ridiculous IMO
Mine is a 2015 tdi with 14800 miles, the light came on today showing 1 1/4 quart low, i stopped at the dealer and they indeed add 1 1/4 quart to top it, that mean it took 1 1/4 quart per 6000 mile,

when i asked the service rep if it was normal, he checked the VW fuel consumption spec on is PC and i was stund by the answer.

For the VW Touareg 2015 TDI, Volkswagen is saying that the normal oil consumption is half a quart per 600 mile, wich is ridiculous IMO

1/2 a liter in 600 miles so a liter in 1200 miles

Thats what i was told by VW as well and thought it was crazy! For the average driver who has no idea on checking on these maintenance items. They'll be empty by the recommended oil change interval.

Mine is a VR6. I switched to Castrol 5w-40. So far its been about half quart for 2700 miles and counting.
1 quart in 1200 miles sounds like the 2.0 and 3.0

yes it goes for some 2.0 too, he mension the passat is also at that rate
Normal consumption, as defined by most auto manufacturers, is 1 quart per 1,000 miles. The Touareg is right around that. I once had an Acura RSX that consumed 1 quart every 1,500 miles. Honda denied any claims that I made, asserting that the engine was defective. I even took them to arbitration and lost.
Between 50k mile and 60k mile service my low oil warning (min level on that screen) came on at about 58k. Dealer added the 1-1/4 quart. So about 1.5 quarts per 10k miles or 1 quart every 6,667 miles is what my 2013 TDI consumes.

About the same as mine
I'm only at 11,500 miles, do a lot of towing, and have had the warning of 1qt low come on twice, so 1 quart per 5,000 miles. Service Parts man told me the turbo most likely is using it. He seemed to think it was 'normal' consumption for what he had seen across the counter and his ownership of two older TDI model VWs.
One quart/liter in 5K miles isn't going to get their attention. It's well within the official "That's Normal" range for all engines, not just VW.
Low oil light came on at about 19600 miles & the screen stated to add 1 quart which I did. First time having to add oil. Oil change is now due.
According to many diesel manuals I've seen and this quote found on a Ford Diesel page,
"Once the rings and cylinder have 'mated,' they will have worn away a considerable amount of their roughness. They will wear slower than they did when they were new. This reduced wear rate indicates the end of break-in, and a decrease in oil consumption should be obvious to the owner / operator."

This means for our diesel, You will see the consumption get less as it gets to the 25,000 mile mark. Diesels also consume more oil than gasoline engines because the oil is used for more than just lubrication and a little cooling. In diesels, oil provides (in many cases) over 30% of the overall cooling, lubrication and cylinder/piston carbon cleansing. The modern diesels, though much closer to gasoline than the 70's, have a much wider tolerance between the piston/rings and cylinder to aid in cooling and evacuation of contaminants allowing more oil to be consumed in the combustion process.

This is a long general truth of diesels to say, until you have over 30,000 miles...I wouldn't worry. Every once a year or so, depending upon driving conditions, I get a low oil in my wife's Q7 with 130,000 miles. I haven't had a low oil on my Treg, and I have 156,000 miles.
