Off Road/Camping Rims - 17" vs. 18"

Greetings T-Reg fans.

I have a 2009 TDI w/o air suspension and I currently have the stock 19" rims. I want to buy a set for off road adventuring and camping but I see many threads discussing both 17" and 18" rims but no real definitive answer. I have found both for sale here in Phoenix, AZ but can't decide which way to go. Looks like the BFG tires are the best choice based upon existing threads.

Thoughts and guidance is most appreciated.

Cheers!

I dumped my 19" wheels before mine was ever delivered to me and had them swapped for 17" wheels. You have a lot more tire choices with the 17" and you do not have to stick with the stock size at all. I am currently running a 245/70/17 on my TDI and that is as big as you want to go diameter wise. Works out to a 30.5" diameter tire where stock is 29". I get some rubbing on the intercooler vents in the front fender wells. Nothing major, but does rub a little on slow speed turns. 30.5" is about the limit and you can figure out sizes with this website: Tire size calculator

I get this rubbing even with air suspension, so that is why I say it is about the limit for diameter for this vehical.

I think 18s are the way to go myself. I run them on mine. I have nokians and they seem to hold up well to the arizona heat and also light trail duty. Heck i even used them on broken arrow in sedona. But the BFG AT always seem to hold up well on my other vehicles and given the range and various types of trails we have in AZ i think that would be a great choice for you.

I just put 265/65 17's on my steel gasser and love them. No rubbing and gave me 1.25in more ground clearance that the stock scorpions.

You won't have any rubbing and could actually go taller on your vehical. The OP has a TDI and has to watch how tall he goes due to the intercooler vents in the front fender wells.

Hello.

Do you have any intercooler vent rubbing with your set-up? Sounds like you've been where I want to go.

Thanks.
With the size I am currently running I get a little rubbing but only on slow speed extreme angle turning like when parking. I get it more now since I have a brand new set on and they are still full tread depth still, rubbing goes down with wear obviously. :)

I thought about going to 70's but didn't want to risk it. The 65's did make the speedo spot on.

Now we won't have to swap spots for extrication purposes :p
The extrication of which we do not speak.

I replaced the original 255/60 17's with 255/65 17's (Bridgestone Dueler D694 LTs) and have absolutely no rubbing on my TDi. I think I could probably go to 265/65, and may do next time but the current size is fine when travelling outback here. They are a little smaller in diameter than the 245/70 that Yeti is using and hence the speedo is not quite accurate. Oh and mine is steel sprung like yours.

Hello all.

First of all thanks for your responses.

First I found a set of four 18" Treg rims on Craigslist 2 weeks ago. I've decided on the Nitto Grapplers however Discount Tire wants $119 for each new TPMS module. Thats $480!!!! Any thoughts on where to buy them cheaper or any other thoughts?

Thanks much.

Did you price them at the dealer? That is pretty reasonable compared to the dealer. Just make sure they are the correct ones for your system.

Hi Yeti.

Soyou know if there is adifference between the computer of a 2009 reading the TPMS within 2006 rims? Any difference in the type/mountings?

I don't think there was a TPMS system in 06, but I know the 04 system is different form the 08-10 system. They removed TPMS on 05, but not sure when it came back exactly.
