I have a Touareg 2008, which is not cranking or starting, while lights, and electronics get on. There is a message in the display panel which says "Depress brake pedal!". I have tested the battery and it is good. I had the computer reset and the car started, but after 1 or 2 weeks the problem happened again. I need to reset the computer to have the car start but it will work normally for another 1 or 2 weeks and then it won't start. Any help? Thanks

Best WAG (Wild *** Guess) is a bad brake pedal switch. If you need more specifics, then a search should find the info.

The computer scan did not show any code but one related to the catalytic converter, which the mechanic said it has nothing to do with the car not cranking/starting. Still, by resetting the computer, the car will start, and will work fine for 1 or 2 weeks.

I noticed that the message on the console display "Depress brake pedal!" is there if I press the brake pedal and also if I release it; does this imply that the problem is with the pedal?. Any additional insight? Thanks in advance...

I confirmed that the brake pedal is turning the rear brake lights on.

The brake switch is not a simple single pole switch. This is not 1976. That fact needs to be accounted for in any diagnostics.

A wiring problem could be the root cause. It is also possible that the switch and wiring are good, and that the control unit the receives the brake signal is at fault.

Try to see if any error codes are being reported with a VCDS scan. Even if no codes are present, all measuring blocks that hook into the brake switch needs to be checked, one by one, for correct operation with the brake switch in the open and in the closed position.

i have same problem ," depress brake pedal" light on dash but won't start at all even after disconnecting battery and brake lights go on and off when pedal pressed . doing my head in anybody help please:
Can you get the car scanned (VCDS)?

There is a fault there (obviously), but insufficient information at this time for anyone to give any assistance.

To help everyone here, please indicate in your profile
1) Where you are from
2) What model Touareg you have (I know you mentioned it in your post - but so much easier if you declare this in your profile).

Maybe, once we know where you reside, more detailed assistance, suggestions re VCDS scanning can be offered.

hi, 07 touareg 3 lt diesel auto, i'm in dublin, ireland . trying to get vcds scan but hard to get mobile electrician here . thanks in advance for replying and any advice
Same problem with slight variations. often the car cranks and stops as though the immobiliser activates. Will start if I turn ignition on and wait for the 4 beeps then starts, won't start if the car is in lock. Will start if I then move to neutral and move the car slightly
