Third time this has happened. Driving for several hours , cruising 85 MPH+ , 105+ degrees out. All of a sudden I get no throttle, car hesitates, power comes back, but problem get progressively worse until it almost stalls. Let car sit for 15 minutes, restart and car will drive fine again for a while.

I scanned with VAG and only faults are for MAF (no CEL).

The truck is almost acting like ESP is intervening, but no faults in ABS.

Anyone help? THis is a tough one as there is no corresponding fault codes and only happens after several hours driving in high temperatures. I was thinking maybe the TPS, fuel pressure, pedal position sensor but all that should leave a fault...

Well you are getting a fault code after all , maybe you should rectify that one first?

You might want to take that MAF off and spray it with MAF SPECIFIC(leaves NO residue) cleaner spray, and see if that eliminates the symptoms.

Sounds like a fuel flow problem. Almost like a vapor lock situation. At 90k it wouldn't hurt to check the MAF but a cut-out like that with no codes sort of points to pump.

Yes - I thought initially it was a fuel problem, but there was no pressure when I opened the gas cap. I also thought about the fuel pump, but my experience is a fuel pump will either work or not work. Is it possible the fuel pump is overheating? Keep in mind all instances are under high load and high temps. Once this happens, it keeps happening even if i slow down and keep rpms below 2K, putting less strain on the fuel pump.

Had the same problem you mentioned with our Passat. It took our VW dealer 3 tries to repair it. They did everything they could think of. Many parts replaced and problem would come back during hot humid conditions.

The last repair was the replacement of the fuel pump itself. Finally a fix.

Drove the Passat for 100k miles after the pump replacement without the problem coming back. For us it was the pump.

Best part of all : Everything was under warranty.

Cheers

92c2 - thanks for your help.
How long would you drive the car until the problem surfaced? The odd thing is I drove the car for a year without it ever happening again, including a few 8-10 hr trips (but that was in the winter). Did you notice a increase in performance after the pump was replaced? I have been thinking the treg has been down on power for a while now....

We drove the Passat for the winter months without the problem coming back, then one hot humid day it was back again. Funny thing I just remembered was that the fuel pump fuse had blown the last time we took it in and that is when they replaced the pump.

Thanks! I got it, turns about an inch.

I have a new problem: So I have a nozzle on the fuel regulator that I don't have a hose for! It is the one that goes strait down. also, do you know the best way to prime the fuel system when finished?

My 2004 Touareg 3.2 acting up.The engine cuts out (stop) at speed anywhere from 30-70mph,after pulling of the road to a dead stop, shift in to neutral the engine start up.
It is ok . for 1/2 hour then stop.then restart . It is definitely it is a fuel issue. I notice only acting up if the fuel tank is below 1/2 .I connected a pilot lite to the main fuel pump line ,the pump is running when the engine cuts out. I believe it is a leak on one of the fuel line in the labyrinth if line or it is something to do with the turbo two jet pump in the back of to tank. My main fuel pump is only 5 month old, Any of you experienced similar headache ? Please get back to me . Thanks Steve from Deep South.

The NAPA Gold fuel filter for the gasser Tregs is part number FIL 3434 - NAPA retail price is $89.03.

The Mann fuel filter (also available from NAPA) for the gasser Tregs is part number ATM PU1033X - NAPA retail price is $69.57

Both filter versions include filter element, housing flange seal, and fuel line o-rings.

While the prices seem rich for a fuel filter, the prices are fair when considering that VW sells the new fuel filter element inside a new filter housing!
