I have recently bought an 07 V6 Treg (my first Touareg/VW/diesel/4x4) and promptly realised I needed to re-insulate the entirety of the inner headlight looms when I investigated the no bend lighting message.

Both headlight connectors have been butchered by a/the previous owner but seem to fit in quite snug.

I found a guy that does Ross tech vag-com scans for $50 and got one done

I have a plan to find the fault and a couple of questions!

My plan is to swap the headlight modules from left to right and vice versa and go and grab another scan and hopefully this will tell me if the non communicating module swaps sides on the scan then I can simply replace the faulty module but if not I need to find faulty wiring.

My questions are ... Will this work swapping sides with the modules and re scanning and secondly can I replace a faulty module with one of the same part number from another VW and then recode?

The headlights work on low and high beam, low beam is super low and wouldn't want to drive at night on a highway.
Cornering bulbs looked good when I re-insulated the looms, the lamps don't do the calibration dance... I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I read here on Club Touareg for a week before posting... Yep, I've used the search function and wouldn't have even known vag-com was a thing, it's all a lot to learn.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

early T's had woeful lights

Does yours have HIDs ... if not ... lights are crap !!

.... even with my early 05 V8 when i installed aftermarket HIDs they were not that great .... slightly better than stock H7 but still sh :) t !!!

Swapping theory ... sounds like where i would go for starters but electrical voodoo stuff is beyond me

Welcome to the forum.
Let’s start by first getting you a nice vcds cable. That’s vagcom there. 199$ and you’re your own dealer concerning scans and fault finding.

Don’t go spending 50$ on every scan. You need a computer to install the vcds software. A windows laptop or a windows tablet is fine. Careful if you go for a windows tablet as you need the desktop version pf windows.
If money is not an issue you can even get the wireless version but that’s up you. 199$ for the real genuine cable and you’re good to go. I’ll come back concerning your lights issue. I replaced mine with a set if used units from ebzy. All good so far. The xenon bulbs go bad after a while you need to replace them. Oems are expensive but they are supposed to last 10+ years. You can test with a cheap pair from amazon based on feedback. 20 or 30$ to troubleshoot and see if the reflectors are ok and if you get good lighting.

Yep it has working zenon lights it's just the curve/bend parts that doesn't work.

I will also consider grabbing the vag com cable I'm just not sure if my laptop will run it.

It runs on most of the windows version. What are you running?
You can contact rosstech and inquire.

The wiring on the headlight is known for going bad and start crumbling. How is the insulation on the wires.
I don’t think you can swap module. If the lights are working you need to clear all codes and scan again.

I had to heatshrink all of the internal wiring in the headlights
237596

So the insulation is all good now.
All the codes were cleared before the above scan.
I just need to either fix other wiring or replace the module before 55 headlight range can be coded.
Per the Ross tech wiki.

What I usually do is get a cheap used part from ebay and test it. Just get the exact same part with same ending letters even if in your case it’s not critical.
I’m talking about the ballast if that is what you want to swap. Part number is 5M0907391 but you double check on your treg. Get a cheap used one from ebay for 20$ and test.

I am talking about the Part No: 7L6 941 329 B headlight range modules,
In the scan it shows the right one isn't connecting/communicating.

I see. Were you able to plug it on the other side? Next option to determine if it’s the unit or the wiring is either continuity tests as far as you can go or a used unit from ebay.

I will try swapping them after the school run, hopefully they will swap and find that the rhs module is kaput because I'm not looking forward to continuity tests on Treg wiring.

If they do physically swap I will get another scan done this afternoon.

I have a used one on my watchlist on eBay

They do physically swap quite easily so I will see what the info the scan provides this afternoon.

There is no mention of right vs left of that module so it might come up alright in a scan whether is is mounted left or right.

Well the scan showed the same fault for RHS module so the modules are good and I need to fault find the connections and wiring.

This means I will 100% be buying the cable because I can't warrant paying for a scan everytime I think I may have fixed a connection etc.

The legend that done the scans didn't take my money for this afternoon's scan.

Once I have a cable of my own I might see if I can swap the whole headlight assemblies and connect them up just sitting in the engine bay that will straight away tell me with a scan if the internals are shot in the rhs headlight (or perhaps a misplaced pin in a connector when I re-insulated the wiring.
