Hi Everyone,

I did do a search and I got 30 pages and while I looked through and read a lot it's confused me even more.

So I have a 2017 adventure model which does not have a towbar or tow module, so if you guys had the choice what towbar and module would you guys install?

What I'm trying to tow is a tandem axel 19ft caravan which will be about 2.9-3.0T.
What I was looking at was:
Redarc tow pro elite v3
I see people are getting redarc errors? Which was my pick of the crop but now I'm unsure due to some of the responses, I come from a prado with redarc module which has never faulted

Please advise
Thank you

Use a genuine VW tow module
Or Westfalia tow module
RedArc brake controllers are fine as long as they are installed as per their instructions including the diode pack

The tow bar brand is sort of irrelevant singe the all need to comply with the ADR's . What is really relevant is the fact that the placards attached to the tow bar and vehicle, will in most cases state the TBM to be 350Kg which is generally misleading for post 2015 vehicles, (it may have been earlier also) were limited to a TBM of 280Kg and I understand that the more recent ones are even a little more restrictive with TBM.
What is important is that the tow module is completely compatible with the vehicle, especially since it does so many things. That leaves Westfalia or pure VW OEM versions. - I also understand that Hayman Reese have an updated tow module that allegedly is totally compatible with the vehicle, but I have as yet to hear any confirmation of this.

As for the Redarc errors these originate when the manual override button is depressed and the Tow Pro provides the stop signal for the lights. The early fix was to install a 7 amp diode or a custom redarc packaged solation diode to prevent the back flow of voltage to the vehicle. The V3 that I had installed in my 2016MY17 I was told did not need the diode -I had a V2 in a 2013 Treg with a diode and have V3 in my 2016MY17 with no diode and never had any issues.

The OEM bars are made in NZ by Best Bars and the OEM modules are available from Australian Towbars.

7L were, are rated for 350.
From 7P this changed and reference was to the handbook/sticker.
Who's got OEM towbar, dealer fitted on 7P with 350 tbm?

I have a dealer fitted “Best Bars” on my 7P which is clearly labelled on the Tongue, the bar itself and a sticker on the B pillar that max towball is 280kg. This aligns with the owners handbook.

Thanks, and exactly my point, rules changed and even more so with CR so now with all accessories, options considered it's not a one rule that fits all but dependent, so the reference to handbook, sticker.
There could be a case though where someone has Hayman towbar fitted by the corner shop that states 350 on it but their handbook would say 280.
This of course doesn't mean 350 is legal

Yeah haymen also has smart code now, are we saying tow pro v3 doesn't need the diode anymore? How sure are we with this? And if it was fitted would it matter?

Thanks

If fitted it won't detract from the functioning but give Redarc a call it won't hurt. You can use a 7 - 10 amp diode they costs about $5.00 max from Jaycar.

Just be sure you know where to install the diode if you're using the existing wiring.
I ain't doing the work my auto electrician knows he does all the break controller modules for any one who buys a caravan in Vic who want the dealer to fit the break controllers to there vehicle.
