Dear all,

I have a 2013 T3, 3.6 v6 (FSI) gasoline.

I'm looking at purchasing some pennzoil engine oil. Am a little confused as to which would be a better choice.
But leaning towards 5w40 at the moment.

Between this
Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40 European Full Synthetic Motor Oil:
Amazon.com: Pennzoil 550022576-6PK Ultra 5W-40 European Full Synthetic Motor Oil - 1 Quart (Pack of 6): Automotive
and
Pennzoil Ultra Euro L 5W-30 (Low Saps):
Amazon.com: Pennzoil 550023013-6PK Ultra Euro L 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil - 1 Quart (Pack of 6): Automotive

Background:
Mainly (80-90%) city driving. Quite a fair bit of stop and go traffic.
Perhaps a long drive once every couple of months, for a few hrs at about 100mph, up to about 120-130 mph for short spurts.
(not located in the US).
Ambient temperature is around 75 °F to 95 °F all year around (yes, hot!)

Reasons for confusion.

For 5w40:
1) I believe the VW specs for the 3.6 FSI are VW 502, while the TDI 3.0 require VW 505/507.

The PZ 5w40 should be the right oil, since as far as I know it is VW 502 compliant.
The PZ 5w30 on the other hand, is VW 505/507 compliant.

2) Moreover, as I understand, 5w30 is classified as being "low Saps"
And from some general reading, while "low saps" is required for euro4/5 diesel engines, some gasoline engines do NOT respond well to this.

For 5w30:
1) 5w30 is thinner, and more suited for city driving? and more fuel efficient?

2) My dealer (direct VW actually) uses Castrol SLX professional oils. Almost all the other VW gasoline models are filled with a 5w40 grade. However, after double checking on their system, my 3.6 FSI was filled with the 5w30 instead. Twice.

Please be gentle, but feel free to correct any of the above if I got it wrong.
Not much experience in VW cars or choosing engine oils.
And I need to buy quite abit of oil at one go to save on shipping, and thus would prefer to get it right.

Thank you all for your replies.

I double checked on a few points.

The Pennzoil 5w40 is certified for VW 502 (gas) and 505 (diesel)
The Pennzoil 5w30 (low saps) is certified for VW 504 (gas) and 507 (diesel)

The 502 specs was actually updated one year after the update of 504.
So I guess it has not been superseded by the 504.

I went back to reading the manual in detail one more time (stand :03/19/2013)

It lists the permitted oil specs as 502.
only in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Japan and Australia, you can use 504 as an alternative.

It goes on to explain that:
"The quality of the engine oil is not only tailored to the requirements of engines and exhaust gas treatment systems, but also to fuel quality......

The quality of fuels can vary greatly between individual markets and this must be taken in account when selecting the correct engine oil.

The use of engine oils complaint with the VW 504 and VW 507 specifications requires a fuel quality compliant with EN 228 (petrol) and EN590 (diesel) or fuel of an equivalent quality.
(Next part is in bold)
Engine oils compliant with VW 504 and VW 507 are therefore unsuitable for use in a large number of markets"

I guess, 502 is a safer bet. I'm unable at the moment to find out if the gasoline in my area is of EN 228 quality.

Will stick to the 5w40

Thank you all.

If your manual specifies VW 502, then your choice would be Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40.

I have a 07 and use Mobil-1 0W-40 meeting the VW 502/505 specification. I do not know about the newer 504 specification.

If an oil is not yet certified for use, then do not use it.

I am not sure why you have not consulted your owners manual for the correct and current VW oil specification for your particular vehicle/country/market. The 504/507 specifications (5w30) are the latest for the US markets. The 504/507 standards have been around since 2004. How and when they are implemented in specific markets are really the germane issues.

US market VWA dealers all seem to carry VW specification 504/507 , Castrol SLX 5w30.@ my last included service, I have noticed Castrol EDGE 5w30 (42 gal barrels) was used.(VW 504/507 specification)

Consult owners manual. Some VW gasoline motors still spec the 502.00, some the 504/507. All 504/507s are 5w30 - it is part of the specification itself to improve fuel economy.

All spec oils are good oils.
