* 2011 Touareg 3.6 *
When I started the engine I heard a faint whining sound coming from the engine bay. I thought it sounded like a bad pulley bearing, or possibly a vacuum leak. I gave it a gentle rev but there wasn’t a direct correlation between the engine RPM and the sound, only a slight change in sound, so I figured it must not be a pulley. Other than that, the engine sounded perfect.
I decided to drive over to the auto parts store to which is less than ½ mile away to borrow their scanner to check for engine codes, but I drove less than one minute and smoke started coming from the engine bay. I pulled over and shut it off immediately. I opened the hood and there was white smoke coming from the exhaust manifold (passenger side). It smelt like plastic to me. There is a heat shield there so I couldn’t really see where exactly it was coming from.
I waited about 15 minutes and then tried to start it again but it won’t even turn over. No clicking sounds (doesn’t sound like the starter is turning). You just hear humming for 1 second, and I think that might be the fuel pump.
Battery is good and gauges work, so I checked the oil and water temp and surprisingly the water was at 180 degrees and oil was 140 degrees. I thought that was a little high for only 2 to 3 minutes of run-time on a ‘cold’ engine, but that may be normal here in AZ…not sure. It’s slightly suspicious to me.
If the water pump was bad would it overheat that quick?
If the oil pump was bad would the engine seize that quick? There is oil in the engine…
Any other ideas?
