Just informed by my dealer that when they attempted to upload the latest NAV data package (V9) on my Treg that the procedure fried the 5F control module. Evidently you MUST have the latest software update installed in the unit before you load the data via the SD card. That little sucker costs 2400$! There is no warning on the packaging or install instructions, which are pictograms.
So it looks like VW is going to have to eat the cost of the new module and pay to have it replaced...

No idea if this applies to earlier updates you may try, but with this version be warned...

It is not uncommon for a warning or notice be given to update firmware before doing some kind of upgrade. So I would fault not only the software engineers for setting the stage for this problem, but also the dumb clucks who sell the data upgrade for failing to warn of the need for the firmware upgrade before installing. Cannot fault the mechanic at the dealer who was instructed to load the data.

Not sure what benefit the dealer gets from pretending to fry the unit. They are replacing it at their cost...
It could be that the install just sat and looped for along time, causing the module to eventually fail from overheating...I will find out more when I get the Treg back.

It gets worse:
After being told that the control module had been fried by the attempted update the dealer installed a new control unit, updated the firmware, then tried to load the new nav data via the SD which it ordered for me from VW. The data was not accessible. Another call to a higher level of tech support at VW revealed that they had bought the wrong data SD and that VW now only supplies the SD with a PIN. Which costs $60 more than the former NAVTECH version! And the supplies were on back order.
So I have the Treg back, with a new working control module, etc...but no NAV for the foreseeable future.
Dealer suspects that the first instruction that the module was bad was bogus.
At least this is not costing me anything, just the aggravation of being without the Treg for days on end (they did supply a loaner).
