Hello All:
I have a 2006 V6 with 130k miles on it. About 1500 miles ago I started hearing this faint grinding noise when driving. I took it to my trusted indie tech who works on all european cars (he is not a VW sepcialist). They checked the truck through, top to bottom and found nothing. Break pads are good, rotors are good, wheel bearings are good.

I took it back and continued to drive it. Noise is slowly getting worse. I hear the noise constantly. It does not change under breaking nor acceleration. Turning does not affect noise either. I can throw it in Neutral and rev engine while coasting along, noise continues to stay constant. It does appear to increase with speed.

Took it back to the mechanic last week. This time when he test drove it, he agreed the noise is getting worse.

Mechanic believes it could be the front 4 wheel-drive differential.Has anyone experienced any problems with this? Do you guys have any idea what else it could be?

Would love advice. Not sure what I want to do with it

Could be your diff. But it could also be your center carrier bearing on the driveshaft. It is non serviceable and "lubed for life". If it is dry, it could be making that noise. If it seizes, it will rip the rubber mount that it is in and then your driveshaft will start vibrating violently on acceleration and you will have to have it replaced or "rebuilt", as you have to disassemble the CV joint to replace the carrier bearing.

What made your tech suspect the front diff??

As above, could be your centre bearing. Very, very common fault.

And more.

You can get some grease into the bearing to see if it makes any difference to the noise. If it does, then you'll know the culprit.

You'll need to read the threads - several people describe how to ease off the actual bearing side cover and then press grease into the bearing.

If you have a set of ramps run it up on them and just crawl under and see if there is play in the drive shaft. If so that is your culprit. Eventually, if it is the drive shaft, the grinding noise will go away and be complimented with a full on loud banging. Yes, I know about this! :)
