My fading TDI.

In a sad bit of irony, the "I" in my rear TDI emblem has faded as VW's diesel problems continue to escalate. The deep blue emblem has faded to baby blue. The 2012 Touareg is garaged almost 90% of its life. Apparently it doesn't take many UV rays to ruin it. A bit disappointing. I asked my VW parts guy if the faded emblem was a reflection of the times. The humor was lost on him. You would think they would happily replace it for free. Oh well. I used my VW Dieselgate credit card to purchase a new $39 (!) one. Anyone else have this issue?

The "I" isn't fading, it's a DEF level indicator ... it's telling you it's time to AdBlu \\:D/
That's true German engineering.

Ours isn't faded, it's about gone at 90K...

Good lateral thinking there - expect to see that on the forthcoming T5!!

Same here on mine. I looked at ebay but when i check to see if they fit my '12 TDI Exec it says its incompatible.

Is there a part # or a link you can send to find these. Also, how easy to repair?
That's true German engineering.
Let's see...

Thermochromatic liquid crystal badge, AdBlue level sensor, AdBlue level sensor interpreter module, AdBlue level sensor interpreter module output DAC, analog potentiometer, badge heater input relay, badge heater output coil, three or four associated service bulletins for periodic coil replacement (every 30k miles, or 5 years, whichever comes first), but only on Touaregs destined for the NA market, even though it really needs to be done on all of them.

Sounds about right

It's a super easy fix. I just replaced the "I" but it comes with the whole badge. The letters come pre-spaced. It's a very clever process. First lay a piece of tape under the existing letters to mark positioning. Then pull off old letters. I simply put my fingernail under them and pried them off. It came off easily and cleanly. There was no residual stickie. Now get the new numbers ready. You pull off the rear plastic sheet exposing the back of the letters with the stickie, then, viewing through the clear sheet that holds the front on the letters, lay down on the surface of the paint and push down when ready. You can reposition before you push down. When you are satisfied push the letters down and pull off the sheet holding them together. You are done!

Here is the part number.

I never would have guessed they would provide an easy applicator for you to Stück the Schriftzug on yourself. Good to know.

Much appreciated BradB.....
My TDI emblem faded like that while it was still under warranty, and my dealer gave me a new emblem for free. I'm still trying to decide whether to install it or just debadge instead. The debadged Touaregs I saw in Europe last year looked pretty good.
Great info BradB, I'll be replacing mine very soon thanks to you!
You'd probably be better off de-badging it.
I'm going to be badging-down. Replacing front badge with a black one to match grill and painting the rear one the same color as the Treg.
