Well - took my car into the shop today for the death lag, harsh shifting, and acceleration during braking. In the end, dealer was able to replicate/experience the harshness problem, but was unable to come to a confident solution.

My 86xxx VIN V8 Treg was not due/elligible for the much discussed tranny flash (my engine type was right, but the tranny flash was not listed for my car). In fact there were no recalls or campaigns due for my car, and there were no faults on the computer.

The dealer stated the cause as "Harsh shifting patterns". and fixed via "Reset TPS and TRANS". Essentially, I was told, let the adaptive driving feature relearn, and hopefully replace the previous harsh shifting pattern. My ride home from dealer was short, so not sure if there was any effect - but I'm not confident. :writers_block:

death lag and harsh shifts

Well - after my dealer performed the following - "Reset TPS and TRANS" - the Touareg does seem to shift better with noticeably less harshness.

The death lag issue - where I step on the gas at low speed and get no response for sometimes a few seconds - remains, and is perhaps worse. Each time I've noted the car is in first gear, so it's not an issue of the car getting stuck in the wrong gear. When the death lag occurs, I can step on the gas pedal all the way to the floor with no response whatsover, and then the car gradually ramps up.

Still my dealer says no open TSBs or other fixes for my VIN. I'm very concerned this random death lag will happen at a very bad time .... :writers_block:

The death lag fix requires a re-flash of the ECU (Engine Control Unit). I developed the death lag after having my transmission re-flashed, then the dealer did the ECU re-flash and bammo ------ DEATH LAG WAS GONE!!!

Tell your dealer to do a little research!

Yes, I'd searched this and other forums, found many references to hesitation and death lag issues, and read of the ECU flash. I never was able to find the specifics to meaningfully discuss with my dealer beyond "ECU flash" - eg a TSB number, or some other reference from VW. He said he researched my VIN, and nothing due came up.

I also read some conjecture on the two footed driver issue for drive-by-wire. Essentially any light pressure on the brake while trying to accelerate causes ECU to kill throttle, then after 2 second delay power is restored initally at 50% - or so it has been speculated. Again, just don't know, and don't think at all this is my issue.

So I'll surely take your advice, and ask for the ECU reflash. If anyone has any specifics I (and the many others gravely concerned on this safety issue) would greatly appreciate.

I love everything else about my Treg, but am just so worried this hesitation lag will happen at a very bad time.

hesitation, harsh shifting and death lag

Well -

I likely owe my car an apology. After my dealer "Reset TPS and TRANS", I did see some improvement in the harsh shifting.

Once I paid attention to my sometimes lazy 2 footed driving style when at a standstill or slow roll, I've not experienced the death lag issue. Clearly my light pressure on the brake would shut down throttle input.

Yes - embarassing that my years driving a stick shift resulted in this lazy habit. I am now completely attentive to my newly learned 1 footed driving technique.

I've not had the ECU flash done - wasn't able to distinguish it in the TSB sticky or elsewhere.

Now - I still feel I'm fighting with the truck while braking (yes with one foot, thank you), where it seems the car is trying to accelerate/throttle up against me.

That was a great confession! Don't beat yourself up over the lazy two footed driving thing. The thing to remember is you have now learned the err of your ways!!! :giggle:

Drive on fellow Tregger!!!!

I have an 86k VIN as well. I have no problems with death lag. The car does occasionally rev the engine on the 3-2 and (if the stop is aggressive) the 2-1 shift, causing a bit of shifty-ness, but it's easily controlled.

As I mentioned, if the stop is somewhat aggressive is when the rev during braking is the worst. A gentle stop almost never yields any weirdness.
