Moonroof Stopped Working!!!

The moon-roof in my 2012 Exec Tdi is not working (luckilyits closed). I haven’t used the moon-roof in about 4-5 months (winter time!)and I went to open it and nothing. Rotating the control knob does not open theglass (does absolutely nothing - doesn't even try to open), raising/lowering the control knob does not tilt the glass HOWEVER theopen/close buttons on the control knob still open and close the sunshade butthe one-touch open sunshade feature doesn’t work as I need to hold it tocontinue opening it.

A couple years back VW had replaced the entire moon-roofglass, motors, control, and rails as I was having some serious problems with itshuddering/squeaking/rattling but since it was repaired back then I have hadzero issues with it until now.

Is anyone aware of a way to do some sort of hard reset onthis circuit or have come across this before? I did not check any fuses yet butI assumed since the sunshade had power up to the control knob buttons this likelyisn’t the problem (unless there are 2 separate fused power circuits running upto this switch)? Is there anything else worth checking? My vehicle is stillunder extended warranty – but its always a hassle to get in at the dealer as Ilive outside of the city – so wouldn’t mind checking a few simple things firstif there are any suggestions. Thanks!!!

I would check all related fuses first. If all fine, it could be the switch or control module. You'd need VCDS to check the module.

The repair the dealer did was well over 2 years and 50,000 km's ago - so well past the dealer warranty. My vehicle is still under my extended warranty so if it's not a quick fix it will just end up going to the dealer to get repaired (but then its a hassle getting in, $100 warranty deductible, etc...).

I am going to check the fuses this weekend and see if any of them blew.

Since you have the extended warranty, USE IT!!! LOL!!

Quit messing around. Seriously. Even if the fuses are blown, you will want to fix the issue that CAUSED them to blow in the first place.

And then prepare for when your warranty expires and go to Ross-Tech: Home and get VCDS. It's an expensive diagnostic tool, but will easily pay for itself. :- )

Hi all, adding some information for future users seeking resolutions.
Bought my 2013 v6 recently with the sun blind not working but sun roof operational.
Tried the hard reset using the blind forward button for 20sec, which stopped my sun roof from working.
No other buttons would do anything and my sun blind buttons would make a click or double click noise from the sun blind motor.
Fuses out, used VAGCOM and got an error code saying
02907 - control module for roof shade (J394)
005 - no or incorrect basic setting / adaptation

So decided to strip the rear sun blind motor out the car by lowering the rear head lining for tight access.
motor had seized via condensation.
Cleaned the motor area and freed up the gearbox and sprayed with an electrical cleaner then reinstalled.
Note, an Allen key hole underside of the gearbox will allow you to check if you can manually move the blind or motor without taking motor down.
Plugged it back in, hay presto the sun blind worked! Bonus!

Now, the process to reinstate is as follows as the sunroof wont work at this point.
Reset sun blind, press and hold the close (forward) sun blind button for around 20sec and continue until it opens fully and closes fully then let go.
Next open the blind.
Time for sunroof.
Make sure the rotary roof switch is closed then pull the knob down and hold for 20sec and continue holding until full cycle of roof completes.
Everything has been programmed back in now.

Cost nothing but time.
Good luck if you have the same experience.

I had the same exact literal issue, except my vent shade wouldn't work either unless I actuated it via vagcom. I caused my own problem by trying to do a relearn using the button. I should have left the damn thing alone. I tried to do a relearn because my cross rails slightly got in the way of its operation. I can do a relearn via vagcom And it would work for one shot but then it would go back to bring broken and I had to either push the button or pull the button to work the window. I got so mad at it that I took it to the dealership to fix it and they said that something seems busted and they couldn't even do a relearn also and it would take them a lot of time to fix it so I left the thing alone and it killed me

Thank you for the post. I had the same issue on my 2016 Touareg. Did the 20 second reset for the sunshade and then for the roof. Now both work as expected.
