Minor accident/high mileage decision

Had a 'minor' accident with my 2012 TDI Executive, ins co wants to total it and give me ~5800 I keep the vehicle ($1700 salvage est).

This thing has been a beast and everything was working great before hand, except I had periodic exhaust fumes in the cabin that I need to get checked out.

This has 206K well-maintained miles, besides the exhaust smell it will need brakes in the next 6-9 months (already bought parts), has newer Vredestein tires (~16k miles), suspect I may need rear struts (still original). Everything else seems solid.

Does anyone know what the life expectancy on these TDI's might be? I figure with continued maintenance, I'll get over 300k, and wont be able to match the features or function of this thing for less than $15k, and I'd be taking a chance buying something used.

What kind of mileage have people seen on their TDI's before issues with the drivetrain?

best!

How extensive is the damage and what will it take to repair?

It's pretty much impossible to estimate how long until you have issues with the drivetrain, but there are no issues that can't be fixed- almost always for much cheaper than trying to find something new like this, if such as thing even existed.

OK, I took the Treg to a local independent german specialist. They are suggesting DPF and cat, looks primarily based on codes (CEL was on when I took it up there, it wasn't on before the accident but would come on sporadically when it was only used locally).

Their estimate is $4795 +tax, doesn't seem worth it with another$3-5K for parts and possibly paint.

I'm going to miss this audio system

Notes: Faults:
5585 - Particulate Filter (Bank 1)
P242F 00 [00101111] - Restricted/Clogged
Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
5183 - Particulate Trap Bank 1
P2002 00 [11101101] - Efficiency Below Threshold
MIL ON - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
8863 - Particulate Filter
P2459 00 [01100000] - Regeneration Frequency
Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
5258 - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 4 Bank 1
P246E 00 [00100000] - Electrical Malfunction
Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

Faults indicate diesel particulate filter and cat are clogged/causing backflow into the EGR system (tech notes clogged DPF will cause an exhaust smell in vehicle; likely source of smell customer is noting); recommend replacement of particulate filter and catalytic converter as first step; re-test EGR valve and sensors (G505) once complete to confirm no additional issues
NOTE: if issues/faults persist, additional testing will be required (see estimate for check engine light testing as next step above, if needed)
Recommendation: Replace DPF, catalytic converter, temp sensor ($4747 plus tax)

LOL.... if you actually diagnose it, you'll more than likely find that it just needs a forced regen, maybe a sensor, etc.
If you actually wanted to fix it "cheaper", you could just delete all that crap for around $2k including the tune.....
It's really a shame that you don't know what you're doing... It's a front end impact, and the downpipe flex sections usually break just from age.... I'd bet money that's where the "smell" source is....

I'd suggest you keep it and sell it to someone who knows something about these vehicles, especially if it's been as good as you say it has.

The exhaust smell was there long before the accident, and yes, it could be the downpipe.

I'm in the North East, it's 3 degrees outside, and I dont have room to pull this into my garage, so I took it to a shop for diag to weigh pros/cons of keeping vs turning over to the insurance company. They will give me almost $8K, but it seems undervalued.

While usually more than capable, combination of weather and a recent health issue prevent me from doing what normally would do myself.

I do thank you for your input.
