My MFI started showing 'please move selector to position p' intermittently a few weeks ago. It had been coming up on average once ever two minutes, while driving, mind you. It then stopped for a week or so, and is now doing it again.

Any ideas on what is causing this problem/how to fix it?

Mine has been doing this on and off for the past two years. I thought the battery was slowly dying (which leads to multiple electronic false signals) but even after a new battery the problem is still ongoing. its worse in the winter so maybe the cold has something to do with it! Two dealer service depts can't diagnose the problem either, so now i just live with the problem.... oh also my heated steering wheel is stuck on now and can't be switched off (still that's another thread...)

Do both(second poster also) of you have keyless entry. If so, i would suspect failing electronics in the door handles. Early model Touaregs with keyless entry had problems with water intrusion into the electronics in the door handles. There's a service bulletin that addresses this issue. I'll see if I can find it and repost.

The bulletin is under the Touareg DIY and Technical Info
and is located in the Sticky: TSB PDF files.

The one you're looking for is

vw.tb.57 08 07

Hope that helps and please post what you find.

If this is your issue, I'd look for a new tech as I diagnosed mine with Vagcom and it's not that difficult.

There are other things that can cause this message but this is a good place to start if you have keyless entry.

Let us know what you find.

I must've missed your post back in '11, or ignored it since the problem seemed to resolve itself. Unfortunately, yesterday the issue came back with a vengeance and this morning I found my car with a dead battery. I think the relay clicking all night (I am assuming this was happening) was the draw that killed the battery.

So if I am reading this TSB correctly, I need new door handles. The keyless entry buttons on both driver side doors do not work anymore. The rear one probably as of around the time of the OP, and the driver's one, probably around October or November of this year. We're looking at $500+ for new handles/paint/installation, no?

My door handles were covered under CPO warranty, so I don't know the exact cost. However, they are not cheap and come unpainted. So parts are expensive, labor is expensive, and then painting. :(

Good luck.
