If they are indeed a hot wire MAF, then it will probably be a platinum wire MAF. They work by heating the wire with a set current and the air flow across the wire cools it, which in effect changes the resistance giving the ECU a reading to calculate fuel requirements. K&N filters can damage these wires, as too any oil coated filter as the oil burns onto the wire giving the wire an insulating coat which knocks the fueling out which flags up alarms. The MAF on mine works the same and can be rejuvenated by using IPA in a squirty bottle and cleaning the element. (The IPA breaks down the carbon coating and washes the wire clean) If the coating is bad then sit the wire part of the MAF in a bath of IPA, this will soak it then use a hand squirty bottle to get the remnants off.
These are very expensive to replace so never touch the wire and be gentle with the assembly.
This method has been used to very good effect on my car till someone sussed where the oil was coming from, i have not had a problem since replacing the filter. Dirt can also gather on the element which too can be washed off.
Hope this helps.
