My '07 V6 was throwing some engine codes for a while (misfires, ignition coil-related). Today suddenly when driving, the engine started sounding like a large-displacement bike V-Twin with no muffler - very loud raspy noise accompanied by a loss of power. I could barely accelerate to 30 mph and the nose gets terribly loud. Any ideas of what may be happening?

Hook it up to VCDS, record and clear the codes.

Try starting it again.

Switch off and see which codes have returned.

Post the codes on here.

Sounds like you're running a 5 cylinder or perhaps even a 4.

I was always told not to drive it when it was misfiring and had coil issues.

Quite right - which was why I only suggested starting it again to get the codes up.

Found an issue

Prior to bringing it into the shop, I looked a bit closer inside the engine bay... found an issue, but - how on Earth could that have happened??? (pics attached) I don't take it offroading or anything.

I called the dealer, the car has lass than 80K miles and has catalytic converter under warranty - they say it should be covered. Just need to tow it in. I wonder if it can just be welded back to the triangular foot or something...

Still, it would be good to know what caused that catalytic converter to slip out of position.
