Any suggestions where to begin? I lost all compression while drive last evening and was able to limp the Touareg home. I'm not having great luck finding a mechanic yet, so I would like to at least diagnose my issue. Going to scan it and check compression this evening. Any likely causes?

if you haven’t scanned it, how do you know you’ve lost compression? Probably should’ve pulled over and gotten it towed. Was the engine shaking violently while limping home?

Maybe jumping the gun on "lost compression". 2011 TDI, 6 CYL. As I was driving the glow plug warning light started blinking & engine light. Engine sounds normal, shifts through gears but no power and apparently no turbo. Barely topped 40 mph up gentle grade on country highway. Tonight will have a friend scan it and possibly check for compression. I'm no mechanic...just a carpenter looking for resources before I hand it over to the big city VW dealer in the high rent district just to have them change a fuse.

so is your TDI covered by the extended emissions warranty? If so take to the dealer! A glow plug light will almost certainly be covered under the dieselgate warranty

Engine sounds normal, gauges all good. Shifts through gears "normally" as a drove it. Just no power at any range. I'll scan this evening. Maybe jumping the gun posting, I'm just seeing if anybody has had a similar experience and can suggest a cause to investigate.

That's limp mode. Turn the car off and back on and it might clear it up. A vagcom scan should point you in the right direction. Any extended emissions warranty? Dealer should cover it.

Ok, so ran a scan and it turns out to be a clogged exhaust particulate filter. Exhaust warranty work was done for a previous owner in 2018. I'll check with dealer for continued warranty coverage. Not sure if aftermarket exhaust will disqualify me for coverage. It is running normal again & warning lights gone...maybe the limited RMPs were to deliberately handicap me until I fixed the problem. So it's either covered by VW, or it appears I can clean and restore the existing filter. New filter is $1600 for aftermarket, so that is last resort.
I'm a VW newb & it took me a minute to remember all that talk a few years back about the emissions scandal. Never thought it would pertain to me so I didn't give it much thought at the time.
Thanks for the help all!

Yeah, limp mode...

Hopefully your exhaust is stock......
Car probably spent a lot of time idling or short-tripping, which cooked the dpf

I found some info about the dpf and how it regenerates. Exhaust isn't stock so I'm going to keep an eye on things & reduce short trips in the Touareg. Sounds like it needs longer trips to heat the dpf up enough to cook off the soot. All warning lights are gone and it's running great. If I have another episode it will be time to clean it and then replace it as a last resort. $1600 for good aftermarket dpf so not eager to pull the trigger on that.

You CANNOT short trip diesels, especially modern diesels with emissions like dpf systems. It will kill them.
