Hey everybody, I want to tow my 2000 Jetta tdi around to a few places to get some work done and it's the perfect opportunity to put the touareg in use.

We have a 2010 Toaureg TDI, with the factory tow attachment, but we never got the actual hitch/ball.

I have seen many forms hitch's at automotive stores locally but I am not certain on what I need to purchase exactly.

Are towing hitches rated for a certain weight? can I just purchase one with the max weight and attach it to my SUV? I plan on towing more in the future but right now I need to get my jetta around so the weight will change from time to time depending on what I have to pull.

Thank you kindly :)

You live in a perfect place to get towing advise. Call (or better yet) drive out and talk to Andy at Can Am RV. He's easy to talk to and knows what he's doing. I had them do some work to my '06 V10 a few weeks ago and couldn't couldn't be happier.

I have this one as well. And yes, hitches and balls are rated. Since the Treg is rated for 7700lbs, get a hitch and ball rated about the same. You can get plain hitches and balls at local stores, even WallyWorld. Just make sure you get the correct drop for your trailer height.

Ah, that is something I wasn't aware of and didn't think of exactly.

darn haha, I needed to tow my car around for a day or two and that would probably be the last time it would ever tow another vehicle.

Thanks guys!

Factory Ball Mount

In addition VW has a ball mount 7P0092730 available (last time I checked 11/19/12). 7P0092730 meets all of the VW requirements listed in the owners manual. To my knowledge this is the only ball mount that meets the VW ball position requirements.

Also note that the latest OEM ball mount from VW might not have the same ratings as listed in your owner manual. I would suggest you e-mail VWoA and they might help you out with your 2010. The helped me out with the correct ball mount fo my 2010.

Here in Cascadia and in many other northern areas lots of corrosive stuff is put on the roads. I do a lot of towing over the local mountain passes during the winter so my touareg sees a lot of splash filled with the bad stuff.

I kept the Alumistinger aluminum ball mount installed in my Touareg the entirety of this last winter. I left it in for over 6 months. A few weeks ago I removed it so I could install a factory ball mount. The aluminum mount was so corroded I had to beat it out with a rubber hammer.

I might also note that the corrosion was removed easily with a wire brush. Just an FYI

If you go with the aluminum ball mount you might want to make sure you keep it coated with some corrosion resistant solution and remove it regularly for cleaning.
