Hi Everyone, I have succeeded after much research mind you, in installing my canbus8 module to operate my LED light bar after a day of wiring soldering dismantling, assembly of all the covers running cables, etc. My background is in Electronics and Industry engineering plus over 40 years of being a tradie just so you can trust my installation is safe and will always try to do correctly. I haven't been active on this site but have done a lot of reading on this site and now it's my time to pay forward to your awesome group of Treg enthusiasts.Touareg 2011 Diesel Auto 3 litre 7P5 (2011-2015) TDI BLUE MOTION 176KW /239 hp
Why do I have to buy the Canm8 Module? Long story short, no you can't get away without using the Canm8 box. Canbus is a digital signal you need the box for it to trigger the light bar with a 12-volt trigger to the relay, to turn on the light. Canbus works differently from normal non-Canbus car electrical systems.
Parts you need & Tools:
Soldering iron Heat shrink Snipers or wire clippers, 5 amp fuse with holder extra wire, if needed, wire ties, Torque screwdrivers. Light bar, with number plate fitting, so it's bright but not big and nasty looking, aesthetically pleasing anyway.$49.95 Aus Number plate fitting was cheap too $19.95 Aus A plug n Play spotlight wiring harness comes with all the wiring and a 12-volt relay $29.95.Canbus8 Module to drive the Canbus hi low beam signal to the Canbus system ($167 Aus ) So in total cost is great considering some spotlight kits can be up there in price and have to fit the Canbus 8 module is still cost-effective under $250 bucks with everything is great. What I did, in the first step I attached the light first it's easy to take off your number plate and attached the light bar plate behind your number plate. Then screw together the light onto the brackets. Run the wires and plug in between all the plastic bits and run into the light assembly area with lots of room. Yeah I know I bought the car with the number plate. The LED Light bar is small but you can see the possums in the trees at night no kidding! Undo all the screws at the front you can then feed the wire through and conceal the wire cables. The relay 12 volts goes to the 12-volt rail see just unscrew and connect I made my own Earth connection scraped away the paint for good earth and connected 2 earth points.

The biggest problem was finding a way into the firewall but there is a 10 mm hole with a rubber grommet on the left-hand passenger side(Australia) drilled it to 12 mm for fitting both the trigger 12-volt wire and the switch wires for the high beam switch. Get a coat hanger and attach electrical tape so you can pull through the wires. Then you can feed it under all the covers and plastic bits under the passenger glove box and feed it again using a coat hanger under the front console to the other fuse box. Be sure not to feed it under the airbag under the driver's side feed it above that. When you get the Canbus8 box you get wiring instructions with it that's for your model car in my case with the 2011.
The next step in getting to the Canbus wires that control the hi and lo beam you must take off all the covers under the driver's side with a few screws and it clips off when you pull it towards you. It says to remove the driver's wheel cover but don't! Yes there's an easier way you can access the wire loom that goes to the steering wheel cover (see picture below)
Canm8 wiring is for this CAN HI Connection white wire from the Canm8 box to Vehicle CANHI wire at the steering column cable loom twisted pair orange /green stripe.Canm8 wiring Can Lo Blue output to Vehicle CANLO wire at steering column wire is orange/brown stripe. The RED wire is 12 volts you must put a 5 amp fuse and fuse holder to permanent 12volts to the fuse box. Earth is the black wire so run that to an earth point on the fuse box also or good chassis earth.
Do all of this with the box disconnected and the ignition off and one wire at a time so if you make a mistake as nothing is connected so no damage.

Steering wheel wire loom, be careful to slice it open without cutting the wires and connect the white wire from the Canm8 box to the orange-green stripe wire CAN HI. Then splice the White wire from Canm8 to the orange-green stripe wire. Make sure you insulate each connection with heat shrink don't just use electrical tape or later on it may come off causing you grief later on or intermittent faults so please solder the wires.

Once you have done the fitting of the box and the Can Hi Can lo wires then all you need to do is run an extension wire the last wire the purple 12-volt output when high is on trigger wire back into the hole in the firewall and connect it to the relay trigger wire. You'll see the plug that is used. It should have a 12 volt and earth or negative.
Make sure you make a ground earth connection I used a tek screw on the side panel scraped the paint away and used that point for the relay earth and the trigger earth.
I can't add any more pictures so I might have to extend this thread for any missing information that I may have missed. I fitted a UHF radio as well at the same time but that was easy just a pain running the wires again.

Canm8 was purchased from a local place in Victoria here: InCarSolutions.com.au CANM8 Connect Highbeam Output $167.95, Aus
LED light bar wire loom with switch and relay is only $29,95 Kings 4WD Plug n Play Spotlight Wiring Harness: www.4wdsupacentre.com.au

Hi Dale what a great post so much detail thanks I intend to look at that for myself cheers Ian
Good stuff Ian,I researched bought the Canm8 box and put it off for a few months then went berserk and did an anderson plug 12 volt from the battery for my work trailer. Then installed a Uhf radio then last did the light bar final stage of adding the box and finish off the wiring. The light sat on the front of the car for 3 months before I got around to actually finishing the job.Drove me nuts but glad it's done and dusted.I will add a circuit so it helps with detail a bit more ok.Thanks

Why would you tap into your DLC connector for power\ground?
Couldn't you find a less critical one?
Polluting your single access point to "everything" in the system is not a good idea in my books.

Yeah your right I changed it,I didnt think of that.Run your Red wire from the Canm8 box 12 volt continuous to the fuse box and your negative to a good earth point Thanks

So you're confident that if the DLC is being used (by a reader, scanner, scangauge, vcds, etc) and there's a hypothetical issue with the Canm8 that's causing it to draw close to its max 5A downstream fuse rating..... the OEM DLC 7.5A fuse can't be overloaded?
Gutsy move IMO, but it's not my vehicle so I'm OK with it if you are.

I'll amend it then to tap off the fuse box 12 volt continuous instead as you are correct and I admit not having the circuit to where the Obd plugs source comes from.So yes your right I'll fix it.I stand corrected didnt think of my Vw specialists test scanner. Thanks for the kick in complacency my bad your right.I'll change it.Thanks for your help and yes I didnt think it through properly.

How is the light output down the road?
Also could the LED bar have been mounted behind the grill without losing too much light? Just for that clean hidden look.

Super lit up that's for sure width and length. I do a lot of country driving for my work so I thought just using the number plate version wasn't too ugly. I've changed my normal halogens to the bluer whiter halogen lights for normal driving and high beam which improved overall visibility by a massive amount. I used the MTEC Super white bulbs for the H15s H.I.D MT-489a Super white xenon bulbs. I purchased them online from France Ledperf.com.Much cheaper from there, here in Oz twice the bloody price and not as good.2-year warranty on these globes too only $82 Aus. Just a better longer light length and that whiter light. I changed my normal driving lights to the Philips Diamond Vision H7s Ultimate white lights, a German design made in Poland, much better as well as the others were just hard to see and low light.

The Light bar for such a small bar is just amazing with the extra visibility height width and length for those really dark treed roads we have here. I haven't really had it running that long yet as I only finished the Canm8 box last weekend. So I'll have a chance to test it properly, but yeah it's a huge difference in visibility.

I used the on-off switch and wired it into the driver's side console, I just tucked it in so it's legal and can be turned off and on in conjunction with the high beam.
Can the Led light bar be installed inside the grill? yes, I think there's lots of room for that sized bar. But I'm not going to try and hide the light bar in the grill as I think it won't be as powerful and I don't mind that it looks a little bit of an industrial work car, well because it is basically lol ...Cheers :)
