So after much searching, I finally broke down and bought underbody protection from Kolchuga, a Ukrainian company. It took about 3 months to arrive, but it was reasonably well protected in transit. I ordered the engine compartment/oil pan/transmission skid plate as well as the center and rear diff plates. They shipped in two “packages” wrapped in bubble wrap with the edges protected by foam padding. Pics below with a gallon jug of rain-x for scale The packages were heavy - about 30 lbs each!

The skid plates are supposed to mount using pre-existing holes on the underside of the Touareg’s frame. It comes with specially welded bolts in an “L” shape that you slot into the holes. You secure the Kolchuga cross-members to these bolts, then bolt the skid plate to the cross member.

Unfortunately, 7 of the 9 holes in the frame were too small for the bolts, and I had to trim the bolts to fit. I don’t know if this will have much of a structural impact on the skid plates in the long term. Seems like it should be okay. But it was very frustrating to cut them with a dremel. It would have been a piece of cake with my angle grinder, but I lent it out...

Supporting the cross-members with a jack made the process much easier. Those L bolts were really finicky.

The rear diff protection doesn’t fit. The leading bolt hole is centered on the skid plate, but the whole in the frame is off-center about about 1 inchto driver/left of centerline, so they don’t align. At some point, I’ll drill a new hole into the skid plate, but for now I’m leaving it off rather than only securing it with two bolts.

Overall, I’m pleased. They should protect well for kicked up rocks and debris. But at only 2 mm thick, they probably wouldn’t stand up well if bashed hard by coming down on a rock outcrop.

Also, as shown in the last pics, you lose about 1” of ground clearance where the skid plates hang down a bit. I think that’s a trade I’m willing to accept.

Total cost, including shipping, was about $500. I may have been able t get something custom made for that price But they seem like a worthwhile expenditure so far.

I'm going to hit some trails over the next few weeks to check out the changing leaves in the Colorado high country. If my opinion evolves, I’ll be sure to write an update!

I put a set of Kolchuga protection on my 2012 Tdi (T3) in May of 2016 (without the rear diff plate as they didn’t offer it at the time). Air shipping to Canada took a couple of weeks, and it was just over $400 usd including air freight, as I recall. I measured the thickness and it was just under 3mm, and all but one of the stringer support L bolts fit well, and that was because VW punched the frame holes, and had left some flash inside, a quick pass with a 3/4” drill cleaned the hole.
I find them more than adequate for the mountain FSRs that I travel, I greatly appreciate their added protection, and the price and finish can’t be beat. You’ll love them!
Just remember to explain to anyone servicing your car that the cross stringers can stay in place if the plates are removed! I had an issue with an unskilled tech removing everything and not knowing how to reinstall.
I have since replaced all the plate to stringer fasteners with stainless hex head cap screws, so that simplifies greatly identifying the correct fasteners to remove when removing the plates for inspection/servicing.

Got to be better than the plastic OEM crap or nothing at all and when you are ready you can always step up to a local premium product like eurowise i guess.

At least you have the 3 year warranty ... not sure how you would squeeze this out of them ... maybe from your financial institution if you paid by credit card ??

Spot on !! Eurowise mentioned in the thread before yours 2nd line 1st para ..... ;) ;)

you cant ask much from Ukraine. All i can say is maybe just respect !! (y)🙏

At least they tried for a product like this.

Australia the land of bloody landcruisers and patrols the original testing bed of the first and original 4x4's (Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme ..... the FJ40) and the birth place of ARB still makes bloody nothing for a touareg .............

Sorry ARB ... no respect for you ! All we can see here is mass production $$$ driven market only to suit the company and not the end user. Thats not how you started out ! Bloody aweful ! ..... Case in point .... thread from Nikoloz to attempt assistance with a front diff lock... end result ... no money in it for us even though all the work was already done by Nikoloz. All it would have taken would have been 1 - 3 days R&D update development and programing of cutting gear ($6000? ... $10000) to assists atlease a few dozen treg owners and profits would still be there.

why??? Dumb asses with to much cash use tregs here for mall mums. And ARB and others are to big to give a stuff !!

And the landcruisers, patrol, Navara, BT50, Hilux crowd are clueless to what a Treg or Cayenne can do. ... No problem ... leave them in the dark. Plenty of worryingly pittyful clips coming out on Youtube titled "******** with paychecks" which also sums a lot of it up.😣😖🤢🤮

How many other countries did try to make products for tregs and cayennes? Not a hell of a lot. Big respect and hats of to the few that do and have done so (y) (y) 🙏 🙏

And then you have to understand what the average wage is in Ukraine. At the end of the day they tried. Bloody good for them even though its just a pass.

At least they understand what a treg is meant for not like feekin Australia !

Sorry that's my vent but its all relevant and real !!!!

Im thinking about pulling the trigger on a set of Kolchuga skids for my 2012 TDI. Seems like this is the best option for the price. ECS makes a nice skid, but they refuse to do R&D for the TDI model and can't say with confidence their design will fit as a result. I would have ordered it, but they were going to make me pay return shipping if it didn't work...Anyone out there running an ECS skid on a gen 3 TDI?

Eurowise looks like the best on the market but stupid expensive.
