Hi Guys

1st post here, but no stranger to forums! I actually owned and ran a KTM motorcycle forum for a few years! So to introduce myself. I have just moved over from Europe to Colorado! I decided to buy a Touareg as I have been a VW owner quite a few times, always Golfs, a Mk2 and 2 x Mk4s already. I managed to find a 2004 Touareg V8 that only had a genuine 52k miles on it at a really good price. I drove it around for 2 faultless weeks, the second of which we had about a foot of snow. Such a lovely SUV to drive and makes my old 07 Santa Fe feel rubbish! A couple days after the snow, I drove home for lunch, parked up had lunch and came back to the treg, turned the ignition and a lot of errors came up, including "brake fault stop vehicle" and "fault running gear workshop". So the treg is locked in park.

I've searched the forums and found a few posts on likely causes (failing battery and corroded wire splices seem the two most likely). I lifted the drivers side carpet and found a lot of water in there, sponge quite saturated with it. Access to the wiring loom was not too great but I managed to solder all the splices I could find (triple green splice, double black (thin), double brown, triple red/yellow). There was a double black (fat) wire splice that still seemed fine and my soldering iron wasn't hot enough to solder that huge splice anyways. Nevertheless none of these made a difference. All errors still there.

VCDS-Lite list is at the bottom of the post.

Tomorrow I am going to tilt the drivers seat back using my newly acquired 10mm triple square socket...and have a better look under the carpet to see if there are any splices I missed, wire faults, or obvious water damage to electrics. If theres nothing obvious, I may swap the battery as I have no idea of knowing how old it is.

Is it okay to disconnect the battery without any charger or spare power source to the car? will it reset or damage anything (don't really care about settings)

If any of you super knowledgable guys out there have any other tips or ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks in advance!!!

Seth

Disconnecting power *may* reset the radio and require a radio code. I swapped my battery a few weeks ago and did NOT have to re-enter my radio code. Good thing, too. I don't have one. LOL! I'd have to go to the dealer to get it. :- /

Is that the entire autoscan? Or did you delete some other modules that said No Fault Found?

There are lots of intermittent faults. Try clearing all faults and see if it will start. Then run another autoscan to see what faults remain.

Water under the carpet is never good. Dry that up and try to find the source ASAP.

Thanks FSJ Guy. Luckily I do have the radio code if needed. That is the entire autoscan...

using VCDS-Lite I was unable to find a reset all option. I tried to reset the ones that has 10 plus faults manually. The same faults just return.

Update:

By tilting the seat back, I had nice access to lift the carpet up completely and have a good look around. Turns out I am not the first person to work on that wiring harness. An additional cable had been replaced and spliced to the brown/red cable coming out of relay 15. This cable had not been bound in the loom, but instead tucked to the side. It was spliced in, but water must have got into it and broke the connection. So solder it, and sealed it and and my Treg is back to life!

This forum already saved me $$$ so thanks to those who have discussed and solved these issues before!

Well done - glad you got it fixed.

Have you cleaned out the bulkhead drain and checked/replaced the cabin air filter?

And you do know about changing the timing belt, tensioners, water pump and thermostat every 80K miles or 5 years, whichever comes first?

And that, unless you are 1,000% certain your car's belt has been done to this mileage/time, you are on borrowed time and the engine will be toast if the belt lets go?
