I read in posts from March that this is a common problem with TRegs (I have it -- my first "bug" after 1500+ miles!)

(For those who don't know about it: at night, the overhead compass backlight keeps switching from bright to dim at intermittent intervals.)

Have there been any solutions from VW since March?

Interested in hearing, I have brought it up both to my dealer and VWOA when they called - frankly its a bit dangerous it catches my eye at night - I would characterize it as suddenly going bright, but whatever.

This has been a problem since the TOUAREG hit the streets here in the USofA and to my knowledge, there's still no fix from VW for it.

LOL and my wife thought I was going crazy... I have to print out this thread for her.

All kidding aside, mine has been doing it since I bought it in March 2004. Although it's very sporadic and sometimes it'll go several trips without doing it. If someone hears of a fix, please post!

Possessed Compass Light

Glad its not just me. I first wondered if it was highlighting as the time or heading changed, but after watching it for 10 months it seems random. Its been doing this in mine since I drove it home from the dealership in Dec 2003.

This drove us crazy at first. A few trips at night gave us an excuse that saved our sanity:

We could be wrong, but my wife and I figured that ours brightens upon compass direction change (i.e. S to SE). Our normal state is dimmed according to the rest of the lighting.

Go try it.

I turned my compass OFF using the VAG-COM. The bright blue light that high up bothered me. The flash drove me NUTS. With the NAV, it is really extra anyway. If I want to use it, or my passengers want to see the time, they need just push the button and t will come to life.

It's been that way for a year and I haven't thought twice about it.
