I just picked up a 2011 Touareg executive with an rns 850. For some reason the instrument cluster isn't reading the infotainment system. When I scroll to audio or phone it says "Infotainment system turned off". The navigation option is missing completely.

An older post said the dealer changed a control module. Anyone know where this is?

I have a 2012 tdi sport that's going to be bought back that I can pull parts from. Can the sport rns 850 be recoded to the executive version? It's missing dyna audio, backup camera, memory seats, etc.

Also, I can't set new memory to the seats. The existing memory presets change the mirrors but not the seat position. Could this be related. Is it another control module.

Guessing at what may be wrong is a very costly and time consuming approach. I'd Buy or borrow a vcds and run a diagnostic then post it...the answer to what the issue is may be pointed out in the codes.

In my 2013 Touareg, if the radios is off, then the infotainment is off. Period. The "radio" head unit must be on, even if the volume is turned down to nothing "mute".

After pushing the "on" button for the radio/headunit, the instrument cluster can then display the info-tainment info you are looking for. I don't know that the Touareg is any other way.

If the radio is off, then you will get that message for Nav-Audio-Phone in the instrument cluster. The car "tab" digital readout always works.

The radio is on. It's basically acting as if it's off. I'll run a scan and post up what it says.

There is a problem with your 5F module (infotinment), word of caution: do not mess around with this unless you know exactly what you are doing, you can brick it and they are a very expensive out of pocket repair. The dealership has software updates available.

Thanks. I already did an update to the software/firmware and it didn't help.

You did the update or a dealership did?

I did it. Followed the directions in the massive 0711 update thread. It went thru fine. Got new dynaudio options and some menus rearranged.

There is some communication between the unit and the cluster because I was still able to set a speed warning.

Getting a vagcom and will post up a scan in a day or two.

I'd caution on 5f being defective until you get a proper scan. 5f can throw an error code but have no effect at all on function of the head unit so even if it shows up in a scan there may be issues elsewhere. Take the time to dig into module 17 or 19 (I forget which one but one of them is the cluster) and verify coding...bad coding can do funky things.

Thanks for the help...

Cleared the first code. Looks like everyone else is still stuck with the 2nd code.

Everything else works fine. The update didn't affect my original problem.

Any one else able to provide any real help.

The update that's posted on this site will always cause a 5f error. It has no effect other than the error itself (this is covered off in the thread). Its also covered off in ross tech wiki:
03276 - Ross-Tech Wiki
relevant excerp: "This DTC causes NO Functional Restrictions. It ONL"Y indicates that a Control Module Software Update has been performed, but the required Feedback/Specification Documentation via Software Version Management (SVM) was not."

Sometimes your head unit bricks which means it won't even turn on (this is bad...) it can't be fixed and must be replaced.

Have you checked the coding and looked for errors in the instrument cluster? If the coding has been changed to something that doesn't work (happens sometimes when one experiments) you will possibly get some funky results.

Thanks a bunch! That was where the error was! Last setting was set to radio only instead of radio/nav.

All good now!
