I have done this job before without issue but this time i slipped a bit.

the right cam snapped forward and now the marks on cam gear and metal shield don't line up. I looked on the cam under valve cover by the chain and those marks are missing. I then went to pass side and those cam marks are also missing. I now assume both cams need rotating so that the cam marks are on top and the other things line up.
i only matched my home made marks and the crank, but i didn't know the cam gears were not keyed...so when i went to put them back on....nothing lined up and thats when the cam snapped forward.

so the question is;

what can i use to turn the cams? i can't use the bolt for fear it breaks from being tightened down. is there a cam tool or anything i can use to turn these?

how many links are in between the marks?

i ended up making a wrench to turn the cam gear and turned both cam gears and crank until all of the mark lined up. i started the car and test drove with no check engine light so i think I'm in the clear.
