HPFP Failure - 2014 Touareg TDI

The only thing I noticed was that my mileage was sometimes good, sometimes bad. I thought it was odd, but that it may be due to the diesel scandal fix. But I was out in the middle of the desert north of Joshua Tree in California, sitting on the side of the road doing some work when the glow plug light suddenly came on. Odd, I thought. Seconds later the engine died and would not start again. I've got a port reader that told me "low fuel pressure to the rail" or something like that. Had it towed to the nearest dealership and they reported HPFP failure. It's being fixed under the extended warranty, so that's good, but...here's my question:

Now that this has happened, should I keep the car?

My doubts are that this could easily happen again -- apparently, one tank for bad diesel is all it takes. Plus you can't drive the car below a quarter of a tank... I also have my doubts about the reliability of a car after such a major repair. My car's already been back a couple of times for problems related to the diesel fix. Time to cut my losses and move on?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks...

Call VW of Coachella Valley, tell them you think your HPFP just did a "Glitter Bomb" exploded, and contaminated your whole fuel system. Get it towed in. It sounds like your High Pressure Fuel Pump just ate itself up alive and contaminated your whole fuel system and everything will need to be replaced... About $12,000 to $18,000 if not under warranty, but you are under warranty, if you have less than 120,000 miles on it. (760) 200 4000, ask for service department and a tow truck.

This will be a standard question I will ask. Do you run your fuel down to close to empty on a regular basis? Do you use a fuel additive for lubricity? and do you go to fuel stations that are known quality like shell ,BP Exxon etc? It is important for all owners to find ways to avoid this issue. Thanks

I did run the tank to empty all the time. I now know that's a no-no. Did not use any additives. Why should I? Doesn't say to in the manual. And I usually get my fuel from my local Chevron, here in Los Angels, CA. Since this happened, I've read up on additives, but can't figure out which one to use. And what a hassle. Hence the question, if it's such a pain to keep the HPFP from grenading, why keep the car? I had no idea that this was such an issue until a week ago.

How many miles were on it when the fuel pump died? Seems like HPFP replacement should be scheduled maintenance to avoid $12k in collateral damage, just like a timing belt. Im definitely replacing mine at 119k if I still have it. Anyone know the cost to replace just the HPFP?

2015 TDI Touareg. Immediately after the diesel scandal “fix” got put on my car like 3 years ago it’s had this problem I think. I get sputtering of rpm’s under lower throttle pressure and a nasty lag or hesitation in acceleration usually when i hit the throttle. Does this sound like a HPFP failure to you all??
I have had several things finally addressed by the dealer under warranty recently. But it took them 3 years to even find that.
I have VCDS. Can anyone help me determine if my HPFP is actually ruined? I have several driving symptoms that would point to this problem? I’d like to know how to prove it a bit before I bring it back to the dealership. They have already replaced 1 fuel injector, the fuel injector seal, Intake manifold gasket, valve cover gasket, exhaust header gasket, and a gasket and crack in the cat and downpipe area. Can someone in here please help me with this?

The issue now with these great cars is reliability and dependability since the "fix",too bad ,but they can't give you a comfortable feeling when on a road trip. As I mentioned before I decided to bail on my TDI. I have an Atlas now which doesn't hold a candle to a Touareg TDI,but I feel comfortable taking on a long trip.

Omfg one bonehead makes a thread to proactively and retardedly replace a pump and now there's a dozen threads about it. Hpfp isn't a maintenance item. Period. More of a liability installing a new one than keeping your current pump. Run lubricity additive and keep the fuel filter changed. Diesel from high volume truck stops.
