I drive a 2016 V6 Executive model. No air suspension.
I have a post on the maintenance section, but I have a question for those who tow.
I have towed my Airstream 25' (6400 lbs) for more than 15,000 miles. The odometer just passed 62000 miles. I have made a few investments in a hard wired brake controller and a hitch modification to increase tongue weight. I use a Propride P3 hitch and I am able to equalize wt on each axil so they are basically the same.
Last week, I had a hitch modification by CanAm RV in London, ON. They told me not to worry about the Touareg and they have found it to be a very good tow vehicle. For this who read the RV pubs, you may have red articles by Andy Thompson from CanAm. They have been studying towing for over 50 years.
Some have concerns about doing the hitch modification, but I have 62,000 miles on mine, and have an extended warentee to 100,000 miles. I have not had a VW Dealer tell me that the Touareg should not tow. They all felt it was designed to tow, and it is widely used in Europe to tow.
I have a question: I would want to use this as my primary vehicle and tow vehicle for 150,000 miles Am I facing high maintenance expenses?
I find it a great "one vehicle" option - very comfortable, feels safe, and tows very well. I can feel the weight starting from a dead stop, but not at highway speeds (typically reaches 7th gear). I notice that when hooked up, the gear shifting changes. It stays in a lower gear for longer. On the cruise control, it seems to do well. My local dealer in Florida, who drives a 2006 10cyl TDI, told me to NOT shift manually. Let the program shift.
If any of you have towed for many miles, I would value your advice.
