I know this has been discussed and posted but I couldn't find a straight answer. I have a 2011 T3 and I have a VCDS cable. Is this something that is done via VCDS or does it require some type of upgrade CD like I had to do when I updated the 850's firmware? Thanks in advance

Not going to happen.

Unfortunately for as nice as our Touareg is mechanically the radio interface was a dinosaur when installed in 2011, probably the 1 thing I dislike most about our Touareg.

When I rent and get a car with CarPlay with maps from phone being displayed on info screen I will not get another personal vehicle without this system.

Yeah I was pretty skeptical myself to be honest. I agree with what you said about it being a dinosaur! Oh well!

There are threads on here about doing it. It's the same hardware as newer Touaregs, but with the updated firmware you should be able to I think. If you don't have a sim card slot you can use a hotspot on your phone for the data. I've never done it, but there's lots of info out there about it.

I think that's for aftermarket units running Android. You can buy really nice looking ones for $3-400. But I don't think there's any way to hack Google Maps onto the original RNS units in T3s, as those are using a custom operating system, and do not even support screen mirroring. Strictly speaking the latter wouldn't allow you to run Google Maps either, but at least you could have your smartphone run it for you, and have it displayed on and controlled through the radio/nav unit's bigger display.

I'm pretty sure Google maps comes on newer Touaregs, at least in certain parts of The world. Those Touaregs still have the same hardware, but newer firmware. Some come with SIM card slot, some don't. There are also plug in androids that use your screen and and you can seqp between it and the regular RNS setup. That would be an option too.
