Making a long story short; I've wanted a Touareg since I test drove a V10 way back when they were first available in the US. I finally got myself a 2015 T-reg TDI about 2 weeks ago on my 53rd birthday. When I got it the odometer had 159347 on it. It runs like a freaking dream. I plan on keeping this one for a long time and am planning on doing some off-road type lifts and such to it once it is no longer my daily driver. Looking forward to learning some of the tips and tricks for this puppy.

Hello and welcome to the forums.
Congrats on your purchase.
One suggestion would be to pick yourself up a VCDS cable. It'll help you troubleshoot and you can also code some features for your Treg.

Any particular reason why I couldn't use just a code reader or is that VW/Audi/Porsche specific? We're adding a couple of new (to us) VW vehicles to the family and if I do it for one I want to make sure they can all use it.

VCDS is the go to for most on here. OBDEleven has gained some traction due to it's portability but IMO VCDS has more tech support. Most generic readers will give you generic codes and very little info compared to the other two.
VCDS is available with 3 VIN registration and unlimited. Of course the latter costs more.
