Hi everyone,

Need your help:

I lent my Dad my '04 V10 (232k km) today. He called me after 15km saying he thought one of the wheels was "loose". When I drove the car myself I noticed a banging sound and feeling (makes the entire cabin shake) underneath the center/rear of the car from 45km/h. I don't dare drive the car any faster - no other symptoms, no VAGCOM available. Nothing wrong with the steering and the suspension seems fine. Driveshaft was replaced at about 150k km.

I just changed from winter to all terrain summer tires yesterday. Just to be sure, I took all of them off and put them back on again thinking I may have screwed something up. No improvement.

Any thoughts?

So I checked underneath the car... Without releasing any of the bolts in the support plate, how much slack should there be?

Just by hand I don't notice too much slack right now...

As above, it is your centre bearing rubber that has let go.

A very common, very well known issue.

Look up "the Jimi fix" which will cost you nothing but an hour of your time, a piece of reinforced power steering hose and a few zip ties.

At 80,000 kms since the drive shaft was replaced the thinner section of the rubber has let go a little early as typically it lasts about 60-80,000 miles or 5 to 6 years.

Don't drive the car until you've fixed it by the way. You may damage other parts of the transmission.

So I just took the support plate off and... You were both right! The rubber around the bearing has rotten away completely.

Thinking of going ahead and ordering the EPS or Vertex drive shaft clamp bearing.

I watched a couple of videos online but none of them seem to mention anything about the flex disk... Any thoughts?

Just do the JimI fix or get the Viagra fix from the guy in Germany.

Many thanks @noobytoogy

I'm going to give the Jimi fix a try this afternoon and may order the German kit anyway to be installed later... I need my car and I can't use it right now.

Gentlemen, many thanks for the tips and advice.

The problem was correctly diagnosed and I did the Jimi fix and... IT WORKED!

Super stoked! Thanks again!
