I have read the posts regarding this issue. I had my 04 V6 in the shop yesterday for the gold-filled oil change ($130 USD) and asked about the error message. The dealer charged me another $100 to hook her up to the computer that told them that YES indeed I had a problem, but could not tell them where the problem was. So dealer explained it would take another 3-4 hours ($84/hr) to work through the wiring to diagnose the issue. Does this sound right?

I think you will find that this is a case a range control sensor either gone bad or having connectors that need cleaning. If you can find someone in your area with a VAG-COM you can isolate the problem for quite a bit less than 3 or 4 X $84, and it will only take <5 minutes.

Had this problem, what you likely have is a Level Sensor shorted out.
The dealer should have found that, if they did not, thats why they are telling
you, about the diagnostics!
I was charged about $74.00 for them to tell me I need Sensor replaced!

I also went to the dealership and they told me exactly the same thing.

a senor was out behind the left back wheel. in my stubborness went home

took the wheel off, found the sensor. then i unplugged it cleaned the plug and replugged it , and Vola!! the light went out and everything in order.

So no need to replace the sensor in my case, and it took me 10 minutes to fix

Do you mean light level or ABS sensor?

This sounds like an ABS sensor, not a light leveling sensor - aren't those in the front near the lights?

in my case i got the check headlight range control unit on my dash

the light came up right after i changed the rear brake pads

and it went out after i plugged and unplugged the sensor behind the back wheel.

But why would i get "check headlight range control" if abs sensor is the fault...

Strange car lol

I've had this happen on an Audi A4 as well as seen it happen on other VWs.. this is common to this brand of vehicle and is caused by the xenon leveling sensor needing to be replaced. It about an hour labor and under $100 for the part if I remember correctly. The Touareg I believe has two sensors but it's rare that both went out.
