I have a 2004 touareg and I am getting that hard 5 to 4 downshift. When driving in 5th and I accelerate I get the thud into 4th, right after the rpms shoot up about 2000. I replaced the valve body but the problem still persist. It is better after replacing the valve body and now is a more intermittent issue. Any ideas? I'm going to recheck the fluid level again.

my 2004 had a shifting problem that felt like someone was slamming into the back of the car when it shifted. i called Transstar for any kind of answer they might have. they directed me to a company called TransGo after talking with them they suggested a valve rebuild kit they sold. i dropped the valve body installed the kit as per instructions have never had any more problems. the issue is with the 6 speeds is the body is aluminum and the spools are steel and the bores wear out letting some bypass happen. the kit has steel sleeves that replace the bore and a new spool that fits that sleeve the kits can be found here Volkswagen, Audi | TransGo SK 09D is what my trans used

i had an 04 Touareg that did this exact thing. It was a $2,000+ Transmission service at the dealer specific to the valves/fluid. It sounds like you’re on the right track.

when it clunks, does it feel like someone hit the bottom or rear of the car with something really heavy and big? if so then i would say it is that valve body issue. don't know why they made that 6 speed with an aluminum valve body and steel spools when most automatics are steel on steel body and last near forever.

Yes it does sound like that. I will look into the valve body. issue to see if that resolves it. Thank you so much

if you find it is the valve body and you are reasonably mechanical look for this kit Volkswagen, Audi | TransGo the SK-09D should be the kit that would be needed to fix it and if i remember it is under one hundred dollars and the kit i put in has 25k miles on it and is running fine even have towed as much as 9000 pound trailers with my V6. it beats 2000 dollar for a valve body

I have fitted the same SK-09D kit to my 04 V10 and all the shifts are good, i also turned up the pressure on the solenoids to suit my shift feel preference.
