Glad it's over with and it wasn't due to failure by any part. I just got tired of worrying about it because I bought the reg used with 68,000 miles on it and it's a 2006 V8. I've owned it for two years and it's almost hitting 10 years. The previous owner bought it at 39k miles and took really good care of it, rebuilding the title.
So here's the tickler (at least for me). My water pump has clearly been replaced at one point as it is not OEM plastic propeller. The one I replaced seems just fine! Question here is can it be reused down the line? I understand why I wouldn't want to put a used one in if it fails, might as well buy new, but seriously though if I have this is it naive to think it could be used again? Let me know. The service shop doesn't do metal propellers like graf because he sees them leak after 20k, so he sticks with the updated OEM plastic. Go ahead and insert opinions below over plastic vs. metal, as I am curious. The owner of the audi/vw indie shop ran a VW/Audi service center for 30+ years and only puts the plastic in his Audi A8 and Q7. I wouldn't know how to tell if the thermostat, tension rollers, etc are still good but I don't want to toss them.
The timing belt itself actually looked worse in the engine then now when it's out of the truck -- so I feel I definitely was premature on this preventative maintenance, but better to have peace of mind than second guessing, and it is PREVENTATIVE...
Overall I am happy to get it done. Can't regret something that extends the life of the regs timing assembly by 80k or 5 years. I just wonder if these parts are worth holding on to. Anyone interested? I guess I can always throw them in classifieds for cheap.
If you're a touareg owner with the Audi 4.2L, and you are in Salt Lake City, UT - head down to Alpine Foreign Repair and they'll get your squared away for a fair price. Now if only my driveshaft bearing could go out so I can use my extended warranty to get that SOB replaced.
