As the title says, I'm going to attempt to drop the trans on my new-to-me 06 V8 (yes, I know you're supposed to pull with the engine, but I do not have a full lift and am doing it in my garage) to replace what appears to likely be a bad input shaft seal, or at least something in the area. There is trans fluid coming out of the little drain hole between the engine and transmission. Unfortunately I do not have much info on service history.

My question is, what else should I check for while I'm doing this job? I have a few odds and ends to take care of (small coolant leak in the area). There is an exhaust leak that sounds like it's from the driver-side manifold as well.

While I'm at it, any idea where the wiring harness for the rear diff lock and left rear damper come into the cabin? Both are throwing codes in VCDS, and I just cleared 33 codes by fixing some of the splices in the driver footwell, so I would not be surprised if there were more wiring problems elsewhere (I may have even missed some-a few wires were so corroded that I broke them by hand).

I would absolutely do the rear main seal on the block while you are there. You need to take off the flex plate which needs new bolts when you put it back together. You'll need to install the crank lock tool, or find some other way to keep the crank from turning while you remove/install flex plate.

Awesome thanks. I will look into what that takes. Maybe it is in the service manuals I have.

I am hoping that won't be a problem because mine only has about 100k miles, but I suppose it is better safe than sorry.

A quick update:
Pulled engine and transmission and separated. I managed to do this without cracking open the AC system but it keeps throwing codes so I may have to anyways... I have:

• Torque converter shaft seal leak
• Rear main seal leak
• Both valve covers leaking (slowly)
• A lot of bodged repairs (hoses cut to disassemble at some point and poorly spliced together, ECU is just sitting there not attached to anything, etc)
• End plate that houses rear main may be leaking (not sure, better safe than sorry while it's out).
  • Requires redoing oil pan gaskets
  • Why the heck is the gasket to the oil filter housing so expensive!
• Timing belt is of unknown age so while it's out of the car I might as well replace
• Flex pipe fell apart, was probably the main source of my leak.

Any clue as to what years/engines originally came with the bushing style torque converter? That one article I linked in post #1 slightly concerns me but I feel like the leak would be a lot worse with that issue.
Also considering an oil accumulator to pretension the timing with oil pressure when I start it.

Timing belt, tensioners, water pump and thermostat are all renewed together every 80,000 miles or 5 years whichever comes first - or renewed regardless if history is not known!

Thanks for the reminder on the thermostat. I ordered the conti timing belt kit but it didn't come with one so I made sure to get one.

Another update:
Parts are in, working on replacing things. Found this when I pulled the oil pump/torque converter seal. It looks to me like the casting for the pump was damaged during manufacturing while they were drilling out the passage that runs down that rib. It looks to not be problematic to me. I think the hole is a lubrication hole to lubricate the seal and the bearing for the torque converter. Hopefully those metal pieces are not floating around somewhere in my transmission.
