Gas leak with pictures...sigh

Hey guys, welp...another day, another few thousand dollars.

I noticed a faint gas smell around two weeks ago, but in the last few days it because much stronger. I took a look under the car tonight and snapped photos of what I found.

There was a *very* small little spill where the napkin sits in the photo, and the entire leak is coming from that area. It's on the driver's side, around the back seat area. I'm guessing the big aluminum tank where the leak is permeating from (or at least onto) is the gas tank.

It looks to me like the leak is starting above the tank, and then dripping down the sides, but I could be wrong. Another worry is that it doesn't look or smell like straight gas - it's brown and oily (forgive me as a mechanical noob is that's what gas looks and feels like). When you have gas from the gas station on your fingers, even just a drop, it's a powerful aroma. The stuff that's on the ground and around the tank isn't like that.

Also, you can tell from the second to last photo that it almost looks like it's in two places - but it's one big stain. So It's hard to pinpoint where it's coming from without having it up on a rack.

I suppose I'm not even sure why I'm posting here, other than to gather some thoughts from you guys (and condolences?) I guess I've just got to suck it up and find a VW mechanic around here tomorrow or Thursday. Sigh...

It's a 2007 V6, by the way.

I'm 50% sure it will be the fuel filter assembly on the drivers side. If you have done the fuel pump (or find a photo tutorial) , it is the first thing.you see when you pull the aluminum plate off. It is dome shapped and the leak is right at the very top (the nipple if your mind is warped like mine)
Seems that Social Media is the only way to get stuff done in my Experience.. So I have started discussions about a Class Action Lawsuit against Volkswagen due to safety concerns relating to my findings. If anyone has this problem please send an email to Tucker [email protected]

The thing has a number in the online catalog but nothing else -- it did not show up in the description section. Hopefully the dealer can order that part for you and not cost an arm and a leg.

VW should improve parts availability for those of us who plan to keep these vehicles a while longer. Or maybe this is planned obsolesence to an art.
Is it that impossible to make vehicles last longer than 100K miles? Seems like a scam to me. 100K is nothing these days. I was appalled when they suggested that this is my problem and that I have an "Old vehicle"
It is very possible at least for Japanese brands. Perhaps that is why Toyota is heading back to number one again. Surely German engineers can do better for what they charge. ;) The Treg is fun to drive if it runs. But hasn't VW engineering always been associated with unreliable?
Good luck. Things happen and they certainly are not isolated to Touaregs. Over the years I have owned a HUGE assortment of brands and models and thing sometime happen to somebody.

I would say chill a bit. Your best course of action, in my experience, is to work with a professional, positive and persistent attitude, and you will get more accomplished... and faster. I have always developed a good relationship with all my dealers and I have come out WAY ahead always. :)
