Probably old news for many, but in case there are some other newbies out there, like myself...

2008 4.2FSI V8 with no center resonator, no rear suitcase muffler. A Magnaflow 2in/2out where the center resonator was and straight pipes the rest of the way...

You can definitely get a nice lil growl by just cutting off the muffler right where the two pipes come into it. A decent grinder with a cutoff wheel or a Sawzall would be fine. The pipes shouldn't sag, but if your do, just use some wire to support.

As far as the muffler, a decent muffler shop can handle the rest. My guy used as mush of the OEM exhaust as he could. But took care of welding the muffler in and fabbing up the two exiting pipes.

So I finally had my secondary cats removed today. While up on the rack, I decided to snap a few shots. Since I never really posted much about my original work, I figured I'd show what I've added to it...

Rear muffler removed, air suspension tank in its place...

Where center resonator was, now sits the Magnaflow...

With the secondary cats still in...

Buh bye restrictions...

Hello LET ME BREATHE!!!

And for those with your speakers turned on and up...

Kinda silly, really, when you consider for $150, I've gotten pretty close to what some companies want for pre-fabbed cat bypass pipes. I've seen them anywhere from $600-$1000. What I've had done may not be the prettiest, but sure works just fine for me...

Yea, our secondary cats are very restrictive. I decided to go with resonated bypass pipes to avoid highway drone. Have you noticed any drone?

Now we need to get those test pipes fabricated!

The 4.2 FSI has the potential to sound really nice.

As far as drone, I was on the surface streets on the way home. I'll take it on the freeway tomorrow, and see if there's any droning. So far, the main difference I noticed, is no more "popping" when I get off the throttle.

With the 2nd cats in, if I was revved up and let off the throttle, there was a nice raspy sound from the exhaust. It's not that I didn't like it, but its noticeably gone now. It sounds much smoother.

As far as those bypass pipes from JHM... I showed a picture of them to my exhaust guy. We was suggesting to just order them. He would just cut the flanges off and weld them back on with the correct orientation. If there were any slight bends or adjustments from there, he said it would be pretty easy to do.

Then I told him the price of the bypass pipes. He said he could probably get it done, it just wouldn't look as nice as the JHM ones, and the J-bend for the O2 isn't a normal thing for him to do. So, there would be some time involved.

I think for simplicity sake, I would just end up ordering the JHM ones, and have him do what he was describing, as far as making them work with the T2 FSI.

If you get the JHM pipes, will your tuner be able to reflash your ECU to avoid the CEL?

Yes. Evolution Motorsports is a great tuner. They will be able to code that out. I will only have 6 out of 8 readiness codes for emissions, but in Az... all you need is at least 6.

I just wish Evoms would get back into the Audi/VW stuff. But Porsche is just too much of their profits (in my opinion), it's tough to spend time elsewhere.

Also, in case I didn't mention it before, if you send them your ECU and a list of your mods, they cab flash it and ship it back same day. Obviously, pay for any expedited shipping, if downtime is important.

'08 V8 is badass. Period.

My 05 V8 was a gas. 08 is the max for V8 gassers.

Though I've since morphed to the fly fisherman (TDI) side, long live the mighty 4.2.

Great platform for your handiwork. Cheers.

Another interesting note about the 4.2 FSI (BAR) is that may be rated at 257 kW (350 HP) at 6800 RPM but it continues to produce HP all the way to 8000 RPM if allowed according to this published dynograph by Audi.

Under WOT, my Touareg shifts at 7300 RPM in sport mode which equates to 270 kW or 367 HP according to the dynograph. If you can have a tuner change your shift point to 8,000 RPM the motor would produce over 380 HP although I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to rev it that high....
