Hi All,

Just sharing some recent problems on my 2016 TDI. On long trips over the last month, I have had about 8 instances of the glow plug light flashing while cruising...accompanied by the engine going into limp mode (cannot produce power to accelerate from a stop or maintain highway speeds). Pulling to the side of the road and restarting the vehicle temporarily clears the problem. It's now happened about 8 times (4 on my last out of town trip).

The CEL light eventually illuminated and is latched on now. For the first 3-5 occurrences, there was no CEL light. I put my VAG COM on there today and pulled this code:

31982 - EGR Valve ( N18 )
P0403 00 [104] - Malfunction
Intermittent - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
Freeze Frame:

Fault Frequency: 8

Even though the CEL didn't turn on the first time I had a problem, the date/time of the first flashing glow plug incident matches the date/time on that code.

When this first happened, I was reminded of my 98 Jetta TDI's limp mode when EGR problems crept up there. I was surprised to find an EGR code in this case!

If you had a similar experience, let me know what you found. I saw some other "flashing glow plug" threads - but missed any referring to EGR codes and others talked about cold weather events (not the case here). I have an appointment scheduled with the dealer tomorrow. I'll provide an update in case this benefits others.

Had the same problem. I have a 2016 TDI Executive. Was driving to San Antonio 2 weekends ago and felt loss of acceleration 100 miles into the trip. The yellow glow plug started blinking. Exited to the nearest gas station, restarted the engine after 5 minutes and the blinking glow plug disappeared. After 30 mins felt loss of acceleration and it started blinking again. Exited to the nearest gas station, restarted the engine and the yellow CEL came on instead. Brought to a dealership last Friday but I scanned my car before turning it in and got the following faults on my engine:

I was able to clear the faults and the CEL was gone before driving it to the dealership. They were still able to get the EGR valve and sensor faults even when cleared by VAGCOM. Waiting to pick up my car tomorrow.

Looks similar. What was the dealer's diagnosis? Are they replacing the EGR?

Mine is still in the garage - awaiting an EGR valve replacement.

The EGR valve and sensor needs to be replaced. I'm supposed to pick up the car today. I have a copy of the court settlement just in case the dealership says its not covered.

My dealer replaced the EGR valve and the misc parts needed for the intake manifold removal to reach the EGR (gaskets and clips). Good to go now.

There was a nice PSA here (https://www.clubtouareg.com/forums/f43/psa-slow-acceleration-at-low-speeds-but-not-at-high-speeds-egr-vacuum-leak-288535.html) that aligned with some things I noticed...but didn't recognize immediately as a problem. I *thought* my 16 TDI had a bit of a slow start at traffic lights...but wasn't sure since this is a fairly new vehicle to me and the passing acceleration is awesome. After the EGR replacement, I feel starting out from traffic lights is noticeably snappier.
